Oh, my Mom's college roommate, Vivian, and her family had a day-after-christmas open house brunch today and (as if there had been any doubt) I reaffirmed my inability to mingle, and confirmed the fact that since the age of 14 my capacity for interaction has steadily decreased. I tried to quell my anxiety with a mimosa and about 8 cups of coffee, but they only served to make me jittery and paranoid. Cognitive reconditioning to make me believe I have something worth saying is definitely in order, because I think I do, it's just that I forget when I'm surrounded by strangers. It's just so much easier to sit in a corner and observe. Thanks to the plethora of beverages, I was afforded the opportunity to slink off to find a bathroom and returned to find annie had been bombarded by the only children at the party, and we decided it was time to sneak out -- after a gruesome hour and a half of being dragged around and introduced to everyone, including my favorite interaction:
Vivian led a tall fellow to the couch my sister and i were occupying, "Girls! This is _____! He's Danny's friend from high school! I always wanted him to get together with Sarah but she wouldn't do it. He's perfect! He's smart, he plays sports, he's tall, Gwen!" And he shook our hands simultaneously with his turning on his heel and zooming away. Vivian is from Puerto Rico. She calls me "Wen."
On a much lighter note, christmas was lovely, the whole family together for the first time, and better presents than I could have asked for including a beautiful nepalese sun journal, "Nuns Having Fun" calendar, uber-vacuum, coffee maker, and books, books, books.
The highlight of the day, however, was "The Life Aquatic." All I can say is that it is my new favorite film, I want to learn Portuguese, and if you can't find someone to see it with, call me, because I will gladly watch it again and again.
Tonight we're going with all the little cousins to see "Mr. Richard," sing at some cafe. His big hit is "The Underwear Song." Delightful.
