He was out on business.
It was cold, and lonely, and too three-in-themorning, and far too much water was falling from the sky to suit anything without gills, but nonetheless Ron was still out. On this business.
Furthermore, he had through a strange series of events ended up outdoors during the already painful fact of being out, so he could not observe the cold, wet loneliness from a convenient distance.
So he decided to try a phonecall.
Ron was thankful that this business wasn't taking place in America as much of his business did -- phonebooths were all but extinct in the States. Here in excellent Britain, he could duck into a bit of blessed shelter from the rain, as well as actually calling the person he needed to hear.
8, 3, 4, 2-5-7, 9, 1, 1, 4. There was a brief buzzing as Ron anxiously waited for Hermione to pick up. "Hello?" she finally said.
"HERMIONE!" Ron winced after he said this, realizing suddenly that he still needed to get used to the right volume of phone speaking.
"Honestly, Ron! It's three in the morning!" His girlfriend yawned for a while. "What do you have to say?"
Ron didn't hesitate. "I love you, Hermione."
He put the phone down and walked out of the booth, into a night that was still cold and far too wet and three-in-the-morning, but no longer lonely.
From the phone that was on the floor, Hermione's voice was buzzing quietly: "Ron? Ron? Oh, he must have forgotten to put the phone in the docket again........." Click.
