This weekend R2 is gone to St. Louis and Chicago to hang out with her girlfriends from college and I'm home alone. On Friday night I went to a concert by myself. About 2 months ago, I stumbled upon a website for a band called The Red Elvises, a Russian surf and rock'n'roll band. They were pretty fun, and they were scheduled to come to KC, which they did on Friday.
Getting there was a pain in the butt. I got directions to the venue, which was in an unfamiliar part of town and set off. I remembered just as I left for the show that I needed to go by the bank first for cash. So at 8:00 pm (when the show was supposed to start) I'm running late and what do you think happens? There is a sign that says the road I need to take is closing on Friday night at 8:00 pm. So I narrow my eyes, shake my fist, and yell through a bunch of ghetto, deserted, run-down sidestreets and railroad yards. I had to turn around a lot, go in the opposite direction to get to a road I knew, then had the worst time trying to find the actual venue. I was within a couple of blocks of it, but had to turn around again a couple of times because the infrequent signs pointing to the place were turned in the wrong directions. When I finally got there I was happy to find that they hadn't started playing yet.
The Red Elvises are fun. They drive around in a red van with a little red trailer hitched to the bumper, and wear tacky clothes--zebra stripes, couch material, and that sort of thing. They ham it up on stage and goof around. Once the main singer stood behind the guitar player and put his arms around her and played a solo on her guitar--that kind of thing. When it was time for a "drum solo", all the members gathered around the drum kit and hit the drums. (Later the drummer himself actually did his own solo.)
