Here I am again, with hopefully some interesting prompts and a question or two you find interesting!
How has this last week gone for you, and what do you have lined up to work on for the week ahead?
I have not progressed far from last week, although I did manage to find the flash drive my original fic was stored on and downloaded all the WIPs to my current computer! WOOT! I can tell you I have about 10 WIPs and outlines (not all have outlines, but not all outlines have WIPs attached!) to choose from, and I am absolutely torn as to which one I should look at. A couple of the outlines (usually when I say 'outline', it's a very rough idea of a thought that could be a fic, but is not planned out or anything) are absolute crap to me now, whereas when I wrote them, I obviously thought they were great! Some of the WIPs are looking similar... but I do have a couple that could be progressed, if I can only get my head around them! If I say I started most them more than 10 years ago, and some of them haven't been touched for nearly as long, you will start to get an idea of how little I've written in recent years! I will aim to do more with at least ONE of them this week.
Here are a couple of prompts for anyone in need:
1/ My mother warned me
2/ Recovery
Now, what shall we talk about this week? How about this - what kind of tense and person do you like to write?
I have to say that in fanfic, I usually prefer third person (from a specific POV, but do switch it between two or more characters, usually in separate chapters), and in immediate past tense, but I also write present tense occasionally. For original fic, I sometimes go with first person, but again, usually write in past tense. I think it's easier to stick with third person in fanfic, because it can come across like you believe you're that character (which can seem a bit arrogant!) and many fans don't really like it. When you're the author of characters, it's a lot easier to write as an 'I' and it can feel more natural, as you are the one who knows what your own characters are thinking and feeling. Of course, I don't always do that, particularly as with third person you can show things from more than one perspective, and also scenes that maybe one character isn't involved in, but move the story along by offering that to the reader. Not that writing in third person is the only way to cover multiple character scenes!
I also feel that present tense can feel more immediate or closer to the action, but for me, it's something I'm more likely to do if the story is shorter (or I think it will be, anyway!), for some reason. Somehow, to me, longer fics feel easier to write in past tense!
Let me know what you usually do/prefer, and how you feel about reading things in different perspectives and tenses too!
