don't you leave us in the dark

yesterday i went to the davis and thought to myself, crap i hope andrew doesn't work here anymore. nah, he's almost 22, why would he still be working at a movie theater? who is sweeping the floor but andrew? not as bony, and with a beard, but still andrew. i looked at him and smiled, waiting, annoyed. he looked at me twice before smiling and coming over. i asked about sean and he said, "he's good, everyone's good." "good," i said. and that was that. i hadn't seen him in 2 years.

about an hour later, the second ghost. brian sent a text saying he was having a party and i should come. so rachel and i walked in the rain from old irving park to brian's new apartment. i hadn't been to a chicago house party in over a year. i hadn't seen him in 6 months.

third ghost. brian comes up to me at some point in the evening, on the phone. "here, let me put you on w/ an old friend," he says to the phone, and hands it to me. james. i ask if he's coming by and hope that he's not and he says he just got off of work and would have to go home and shower and change and he would be too tired. i haven't seen him in a year and a half.

it's funny how things like movies and house parties and showers are all that stand in the way of randomly bumping into things from the past. it's funny how people stay the same.
