Father's Day

This is a tough one. Obviously.

I'm surprised by how bummed I get by parent days too, though. My Facebook feed is full of girls posting pictures of them with their fathers and saying how he's the most important man in their life, he's so great, he was always there for them, et cetera. It makes me sad. Plus there's the slew of first father's days, where a wife or girlfriend gushes over her dude and maybe posts a picture of him with a tiny child. Ugh. So heart-wrenching. I know it's not helping Jon either.

Bah.
I need to get outside today. It is sunny and gorgeous but yesterday I spent most of the afternoon in the basement reading. I did take the dog for a walk, and run some errands, and spent maybe 20 minutes reading outside until the mosquitos drove me nuts. Plus I baked a bunch in the sunny kitchen, which can't be beat. I made a modification of Thug Kitchen's bean burgers for the first time; I used celery instead of onion (because Jon hates onion) and I changed the seasonings around a bit (used a BBQ spice mix from Penzey's, liquid smoke, garlic, black pepper, and soy sauce). They turned out really good. Next time I will have to make the patties thicker and I might try using black beans instead of kidney. They were also a tiny bit dry so I wish I would have had a thick slice of tomato to top it off. Nevertheless, a definite success. Jon really liked them too, though he approached with trepidation because they were a pretty vibrant green from the spinach. :-)

I made two loaves of banana bread and a batch of Tassajara rosemary/thyme/olive oil focaccia bread too. The latter was probably the best bread I've ever had when I sliced it warm from the oven and put butter on it. I ate like half the loaf within an hour of taking it from the oven. Yummmmmm. I felt like a bit of a rockstar.

Still hacking away at "Ender's Shadow" because I am the worst. Goddamnit. My list to read has grown and grown and yet I fail. Ugh.

The dog is looking at me forlornly while she lays on the kitchen floor. I suppose I should go get dressed and take her for a walk and then when I get back I will be able to have all the windows open for some sunshine (as opposed to right now when I am wearing insufficient clothing).

Okay. Peace out.
Happy Father's Day for those to whom it applies. Be excellent to one another, dudes.
