The rats are sorted-either Dracula ... well, dealt with them, or they vanished when the flood ended. I doubt they got anywhere else in the ship; they were quite insistent on staying in O'Brien's room.

Thank goodness for that.

Although I can't say I would have minded if the Admiral had had to furnish us all with several ratting dogs.

Considering his usual sense of humour, I'm surprised he didn't, now that you mention it. Perhaps even he has his limits.

I do, however, now have plenty of cage traps in the event we ever need them again.

Perhaps he was waiting for someone to ask? Dogs are quite a responsibility, and I'd hate to see one stuck with someone who wouldn't care for him properly.

Let's hope that we don't.

Speaking as a dog owner, I can only agree. [It occurs to her that maybe she should have let Dios deal with the rats, except then she remembers that some of them nearly outweighed him.]

You are as well? What sort?

Scottish terrier. If you ever want to meet him, you can usually find me walking him in the CES of a morning.

I'd love to meet him! What's his name?

Dios. Not my name for him, but I didn't like to change it. Come join us in the CES before breakfast. He likes people. Well, most people. But I expect he'll like you.

Dogs have always seemed to like me. Most animals, in fact. Not that tiger, but it had been starved and didn't like anybody.

...No, I don't imagine a tiger in those circumstances would be thrilled with anyone.

Join me on our walk and tell me about the tiger, then.

[George dresses for morning strolling. And not just in clothing, like a modern person: in his suit and tie and bowler hat, which he removes in greeting.]

Good morning, ma'am. And who is your handsome escort?

[Una-who is dressed in a sort of very English country tweed jacket-and-trousers-smiles and waves in greeting, and Dios bounds out as far ahead as his leash will permit him to greet George with a lot of bouncing and tail-wagging.]

This is Dios. I think he already likes you.

[George, who is luckily unleashed, crouches down just as eagerly and commences to pat, scratch, and coo:]

Good boy. Good boy, Dios.

[If George had a tail, it would also be wagging. He eventually manages to return his attention to Una.]

If I had known there would be so many other dogs on board I would have brought my Violet.
