Sometimes Baby felt bad about the sort-of friendship they had going on. Bad about keeping it a secret - as much as he knew he was supposed to, Baby couldn't regret it. Sam and Dean were still worried about the apocalypse, about Lucifer coming after them...and Baby hadn't eased their minds. He knew it wouldn't work, anyway, telling them that Lucifer had stepped down. They'd still be suspicious and they'd still try to kill him...and Baby hadn't had sex with him just to let Sam and Dean kill him. Not that they could, but Baby didn't want Lucifer to have to hurt them, either, even if it was self-defense.

So Baby had invited Lucifer over - which involved praying to the Devil, because that was normal - when Sam had gone to the library to research and Dean had taken off in search of a bar.

Baby hadn't accompanied Dean - he knew Dean's...sex requirement schedule and knew that this particular night was one where he'd want to have the freedom of going home with someone.

They started to get into the game - Baby bet fairly recklessly, but he wasn't throwing the game that much; Lucifer seemed to be catching on pretty quickly. After a particularly frustrating hand, Baby threw a red M&M at the angel, laughing a little as it bounced off his cheek.

It was nearly an hour after the start of their game that Sam made his way back to the motel room. The library had given him all the information it had to offer, and the hunter was so tired he could barely keep his eyes open. Pushing open the door, he slipped out of his jacket.

"I'm back, Baby," he said, rubbing at a crick in his neck. He turned to face the other man and went rigid when he caught sight of his companion. "Wh- Lucifer?"

Sam made a grab for Baby's arm, pulling him out of the chair and pushing him behind him.

"What the Hell are you doing here?"

[ooc: Are we going with Sam and Baby are in a relationship here or they're just friends?]

Lucifer watched the little candy bounce into his lap and felt the beginnings of a smile tug at his lips. He was comfortable around the car. At ease. And he could give as good as he got, Gabriel had to learn most of his good tricks from someone after all. He flicked a yellow one, bouncing it off Baby's nose with a mischievous glint to his blue eyes.

The door swung open and his good mood evaporated with a burst of cool nighttime air.

He made no move to stand, no move to stop Sam from jerking Baby up and away from him. Something unpleasant stirred inside him, but he remained still. Baby likely wouldn't remain his friend if he did anything selfish or rash.

So he pulled a face and Sam's distasteful idiom. "Really Sam. I'd have expected better language from you. You are the smarter one of the two."

"Aw, fuck," Baby muttered, stumbling as Sam yanked him out of the chair, guarding him with his body. He hadn't expected either of the brothers home so soon, and now the cat was out of the bag.

But Baby took a deep breath and kept calm, tugging at Sam's arm, trying to hold him back and soothe him at the same time. His eyes flickered down to the gun on the hunter's belt, hoping Sam didn't decide to use it. "...He's visiting me, Sam."

"It's okay," Baby tried to edge around Sam's side, to show him that there wasn't any danger. "He's not going to hurt us."

[ooc: I think just friends for this verse, hun. :]

"Visiting? You know who this is, and you let him in?"

Sam was seeing red. If he hadn't come home when he did, Baby could have been killed. The hunter would never have forgiven himself if that happened.

"Maybe you forgot that he wants to kill the entire human race. Or that he wants to wear me as a meat suit. Or that this is Lucifer we're talking about."

The younger Winchester didn't care that the angel could hear every word he was saying. Lucifer couldn't kill him if he wanted to have his vessel, and hurting Baby would completely guarantee that Sam would never say yes.

Well this was going swimmingly.

Lucifer set down his cards, popping an M&M in his mouth while Sam flustered and flailed. It was almost endearing, but he had a fairly good idea that pointing that out wouldn't help matters. Baby liked him (he thought) and he liked Baby. Which meant he wasn't going to let Sam run him off. But he also didn't want to make things difficult for the first possible friend he'd ever had.

"Wanted, Sam. Past tense. You had to have noticed the sudden stop in omens. No Horsemen, no storms." His voice is patient, as if he's explaining a complicated concept to a very small child.

Sam could be rather excitable.

"...He saved my life, Sam." Baby quietly offered the fact as proof, looking over at Lucifer. He wasn't moving from the bed, which was good - didn't want Sam lunging for the Holy Oil...not that it was guaranteed he wouldn't anyway.

"See? He's not hurting anyone." Baby managed to edge out halfway from behind Sam, shooting Lucifer an apologetic smile.

"Can you tell him you're not trying to ride him into battle anymore?" Baby's tone probably sounded far too friendly to Sam, but hey - they were friends. He'd made a friend. Dean was always telling him to be more social...and Baby was choosing to ignore the fact that the hunter had been refering to women at a bar, in various states of inerberation.

Sam was conflicted. Baby was someone he could trust, one of the few. But they were talking about Lucifer. The fallen angel hated the human race. He wanted all of them dead. Sam refused to believe that all of that changed overnight.

"Why the sudden change of heart?" he asked, turning his attention to Lucifer. "And why should I believe it's real?"

Lucifer sighs heavily, slowly pulling the cards back together in a neat little stack. He doesn't want to cause Baby any distress.

"I saved his life, Sam." He's just going to skip over what happened shortly after that. No sense in giving poor Sam a heart attack. Lucifer remained where he was sitting, cards held loosely in one hand. "I'm tired, Sam. I do not wish to fight anymore. I find the company of demons," his nose wrinkles, "unpleasant."

Gabriel was why. But damned if he was going to admit that yet. "So I chose to walk away. Michael is the only one still standing on the board and he can stand there forever if he so desires."

He probably would. Daddy's good soldier until the end. Lucifer both loved and hated him for that.

"It's not sudden." Baby commented guiltily, averting Sam's eyes by watching Lucifer's fingers neatly pulling the deck back together. "...It's been gradual."

The bus, which Sam knew about. Then a stolen kiss, which he didn't. Going out for a drink. Saving Baby's life. Sex to save Lucifer's...cursed lube. It had taken a few months for them to end up throwing candy at each other and playing cards; Baby had just trusted Lucifer's word right away. He'd proved it.

"Why didn't you tell me about this, Baby?" It was a stupid question. He knew exactly why. Because he knew the Winchester would react like this. But he couldn't help it. Baby was important to him, and he didn't like thinking about him being alone with the angel who was supposed to end the world.

"We....we need to talk about this, okay? Sit down and figure out what the Hell is going on."

“Can you really blame him, Sam? Who, aside from your remarkable car, would even agree to talk to me?” The use of Hell as an idiom gets another pointed look from Lucifer, but he doesn’t draw further attention to it. At least not yet. “The omens have gone dormant. No storms, not even any demons to speak of. Did you really chalk all of that up to luck? I have stepped away, leaving Michael to stand and wait for the Apocalypse on his own.”

Lucifer shuffles the deck carefully. He’s learned by watching Baby and mercifully, none of the cards go flying. “Then sit. Sit and play cards. There’s no need for hostility. Baby has been a very good host and I would like to discuss things calmly.”

And that was the key. Calm. Lucifer considered Baby a friend. A friend he might occasionally have sex with, but still a friend. And as a friend, if that meant he needed to go in order to spare Baby conflict with Sam, then he would do so.

"I don't want you to hurt him." Baby mumbled, tugging on Sam's arm again, half-pleading. "He's my friend, Sam."

He cared about Sam - of course he did. He was one of Baby's boys, he'd been with them forever. But he'd grown to care about Lucifer, too. He hoped he wasn't going to choose.

When Lucifer called him a good host and offered to play another game, Baby stifled a chuckle. Apart from the sugary mess in the bathroom. Baby nudged Sam encouragingly, moving to sit on the bed with the angel and let Sam have the chair, provide him with a measure of distance he knew Sam would want...if he chose to sit down.

Sam sighed softly. This was a Hell of a decision to make. But he slowly sank into the chair. Baby trusted the angel, which meant Sam had to give him a fair chance.

"What are we playing?" he asked, shifting the chair just a little closer to Baby. He wouldn't truly be able to defend him from an archangel, but it made him feel better.

Baby has been a remarkably good influence on Lucifer. Instead of wanting to keep Baby near and away from Sam, he’s learned to let Baby determine his own course. He was his friend, and as such, he would let him make his own decisions. Who he wanted to be with.

But he was the first one to make him laugh. To save his life, to touch him. Lucifer couldn’t help but be a little selfish.

He shuffles the cards, catching the few that flip out in his lap. “Poker. Baby was teaching me.” A vague hint of a smile curled his lips. “And throwing his winnings at me when he lost.”

Those first few days after he had stepped away from the plan were terrifying. He was a lost archangel; no home, no family, nowhere for him to go. So naturally he gravitated towards Baby. Watched him. Met him on a bus and talked to him. Even kissed him. It was Baby that gave him some sense of structure, of focus. Talking to him. Learning. And when Sam and Dean weren’t around, protecting him.

"Hey, I'm not throwing the game this time. You'd better watch out." Baby warned, glancing at Sam to see the hunter's reaction to the exchange. He'd sat down, which Baby took as a good sign, moving a little closer to the car, defensive.

Baby's shoulder brushed against Lucifer's as he leaned forward, gathering the candies to pass out between the three of them. He ate a few, smiling softly at Sam as he handed him his pile.

Baby didn't know what would have happened to him if he'd been hit with the spell while with Sam and Dean. Sure, he knew they would have...done something, they wouldn't let him die but...well, he didn't know. It might've been awkward - if it were Dean, it definitely would have been awkward, because Baby knew Dean would make a much bigger deal out of it than it really was, in his head.
