So I saw Megamind (2010). Not in 3D. It seems like everything is in 3D now …. the next thing you know Charlie Bit My Finger will be in 3D! I didn’t want to pay the extra $2.75 for 3D when the last Dreamworks cartoon I saw in 3D would have been just as “good” in traditional 2D (this was Shrek: Forever After (2010), for anyone who’s interested). Although I must say Toy Story 3 (2010) made excellent use of the 3D projection; this isn’t surprising though, as Pixar and Disney have always been that little tiny step ahead of the other animation filmmakers. But I digress, back to the matter at hand: Megamind. This movie was okay. Not horrible, not amazing, it was “cute”. It has some solid laughs and shows Will Ferrell in his most adorable role yet - I actually found myself attracted to this giant-headed, blue-bodied, cinematic evil genius. It might not have hurt his appeal that Megamind is constantly backed by awesome music: AC/DC, Ozzy, Guns N Roses, George Thorogood’s Bad to the Bone and of course, MJ’s Bad. Megamind’s sidekick is played by David Cross whose voice is perfect for the part of Minion - and despite the fact that they are evil doers, they have a deep friendship bond, which I found admirable. It was refreshing to see a children’s film from “the bad guy’s” point of view. I’ve often found the villains to be the most entertaining - not to mention the most developed: for example, Ursula, Darth Vadar, Jafar, and Captain Barbossa.
This film has a lot of things going for it: a stellar cast (including Ferrell, Cross, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill & Brad Pitt), a great story concept, a rockin’ soundtrack and is good visually, but it doesn’t wow. For a fun, silly film, catch Megamind, but don’t waste your money at the theatres unless you have to see it before it comes out on dvd.
