Instant Star

Mar 06, 2007 10:17

Recently I've become fascinated with Instant Star from The N cable channel. Thanks to Angel from TV Guide and the Popgurls website for getting me hooked. When I was living in the states, I didn't get The N, but I had the opportunity to catch an episode of Instant Star when I was housesitting for a friend. I had forgotten about the show, but I took a chance, and downloaded an episode from iTunes. Two seasons and a season 3 season pass later, I think that I can claim to be officially obsessed. In addition to the actual episodes, I've purchased the soundtracks for both seasons.

Jude Harrison (played by real-life singer, Alexz Johnson) wins an American Idol-type singing contest called Instant Star. The series picks up as she wins, and details her struggle to balance life as a 15 year old high school sophomore and her life as a recording artist. She's a little bit punk, style-wise with her shocking red hair and clothing (thankfully this changes in seasons 2 & 3).

Jude's best friends are Jamie and Kat. Jamie is in love with Jude, while Kat is secretly in love with Jamie. Ooh, triangle! I actually hate triangles, but whatever hooks viewers.

Eventually Kat and Jamie start a relationship, which ends badly, as these things are wont to do.

At Jude's label G-Major is her hottie producer, Tom Quincy. Formerly a boyband member (BoyzAttack), he's become an upandcoming music producer. Even though Tom is 22 at the start of the show and Jude is 15, sparks fly.

Ok, I'll admit that I'm shallow, and a good part of the reason I watch the show is for Tim Rozon who plays Tommy. I'm not above watching shows for pretty men. ;)

Rounding out the show are Jude's parents (not the best), and her older sister Sadie, who was a huge BoyzAttack fan. This comes to play throughout the season.

More to come later. :)

As Amanda from Popgurls says regarding the season 2 soundtrack: The one true ballad on this album is "There's Us," which we've been led to believe will not appear in the show until the finale in a couple of weeks. I love it already, because it somehow takes me back to being 17 and having my heart broken. "Not everything is supposed to come true," says the chorus. "Some things are best unsaid, some love is not worth love at all." And that, right there, is why even adults are watching these so-called teen shows on The N and falling in love with the characters. Because we were all there once, and as we get older we're wont to examine our teen years with the benefit of distance.
