  i was wondering why did Edward Rutledge-A signer of the Declaration of Independence put a symbol by his name?

I haven't seen the document to see how it looks but perhaps he just added his 'mark' to his signature? 'Marks' were often used if persons couldn't write.

If I recall correctly, the larger plantations had specific marks that they put on their items for export ie: tobacco barrels, cotton bales, etc. The back slash following his name might be a short form of his mark for his products at market.
