Hooray, it's finally Photo Day! I've been looking forward to seeing how everyone's pictures come out...If there's video, I'd also love to see it, but once again, I live in the wrong part of the country. Unsurprisingly,
Manny forgot what today was: It's photo day over here at the ranch, which means that all the players are dressed in their home whites. White top, white pants, even for workouts this morning. Though Manny Ramirez briefly didn't get the message, putting on his red practice jersey before being reminded of the dress code by George Kottaras, whose locker is across the aisle from Ramirez's.
(Georgie Sparkles to the rescue! I wonder if Manny also forgot the robot...)
In more important news,
Tito has finally gotten a contract extension. It's a three-year deal with two options, so we have him locked up to 2011 minimum (ideally, we'll pick those options up, though). This means three more years of cribbage! Woohoo!
And now for my Pac-10 prospect alert of the day:
the Globe ran an article on none other than former Stanford human biology major Chris Carter, who lists reading Dante as one of his hobbies, amongst other things. And I learned all that from
his college player page. (He mentioned Dante specifically somewhere else, but I remembered it.) What do we learn from this article? That he completed his degree in 3 1/4 years. This kid is freaking brilliant.
(And if anyone really cares, yes,
Jed has a player page, too, and yes, you can make fun of how gawky he looked in college.)
Finally, here's what everyone really wanted to see:
center_field has
the footage of Dustin Pedroia smashing Gary Tanguay's head to tiny little bits in the form of some baseballs and a pinata. I adore this kid.
(And I'm going to look really pathetic saying this, but in one of those clips where Dustin is fielding, the player that appears behind him for about half a second is indeed Jed Lowrie. I'm so sad...)
EDIT:
Rob Bradford understands the allure: Really looking forward to watching Jed Lowrie play. In compared to Pedroia when he came out, both polished because of college. Haven’t seen him play a lot since got time in spring with WBC.
Me, too, Rob. Me, too. (Or am I misreading that and it's actually something Tito said? In that case, both Rob and Tito understand the allure...!)
EDIT 2:
Thank you, Steven Senne! I'm sure you could probably guess why anyway.
EDIT 3:
The bit from Bradford definitely came from Tito: One player Francona looks forward to monitoring this spring is top infield prospect Jed Lowrie. Two springs ago, Lowrie spent a lot of time in camp due to the number of Boston players who had to leave for the World Baseball Classic. "He's certainly a young player that is certainly well thought of, and he deserves that," said Francona. "We're really looking forward to watching him play this spring, regardless of how he plays. He's an interesting young man. Switch-hitter, can play all over the infield, he's improving. Plate discipline. He goes to shortstop maybe with people saying, 'Maybe he can't play short.' You know what? He can play short. It's going to be fun to watch, for sure."
Thank you, Tito. Get as many people as you can to pay attention to Jed now. He's that awesome.
(On a random note,
the Sox signed Bartolo Colon to a minor league deal whilst I was eating dinner. It's a bit random, but very unsurprising.)
