Well, there's lots of good news to go around today! First off, Curt Schilling has pretty much officially resigned with Boston - he'll play one last season with the Red Sox, which is delightful to hear. Secondly, Youk got what he deserved today - a Gold Glove for his work at first base this season. He was also wearing his Bengals hat, too - I feel bad, though, because they've had a rough season (they're currently 2-6). Sadly, Coco did not get one, even though I think he deserved one for the way he patrolled center this year.
My family's team received two Gold Gloves, as well - David Wright and Carlos Beltran both earned them this year. I'll be sure to call my parents tonight with this news for them.
Finally, there's also some progress going in a couple of areas - I'm getting back to writing Londinium (chapter nine will hopefully be finished soon, and I have a pretty important revision to make to chapter one) and I'm working on the bios for the main characters in attendance at Slumberwood College. (I have the bio picture for the inevitably vertically challenged second baseman done already, and I'll be working on the rest of the infield soon!) I'll try to get one or two player bios up each week, so we'll see if I can keep up with this. You can find the team's Livejournal at
slumberwood, so if anything happens to them they'll be sure to keep everyone posted. (If they don't, don't worry - I will.)
Otherwise, nothing much is happening here, with the exception of the fact that I have just found out that I am exempt from writing a paper for sociology because of how well I wrote the other one several weeks ago. This makes me happy and gives me more time to write what I want to, which is wonderful. College is probably the first place that I've truly realized that being a good writer is actually a valuable skill. Sure, I don't have any athletic ability, am awful at math (with the exception of statistics due to my love of baseball, really!), lack eloquence when I talk and don't possess any disturbingly random talents, but I do apparently have somewhat of a mastery of my pen, which it seems may finally be my saving grace. I'm seriously stunned that something I can do is actually useful for once. Most of my other talents would require me to get into a field I have almost no chance of getting into (for example, my freakish intensity and concentration on the road coupled with my actual knack for driving would only be useful were I a professional driver - truck, getaway or racer, you decide what I'm best suited for), but it seems that history majors have to do a lot of reading and writing, two things I'm actually good at.
I'm excited. I don't feel useless anymore, yay! I never really felt totally useless, of course, but it's nice to occasionally find out you're sort of good at something you like doing. Everyone likes getting a pat on the back once in a while, don't they?
EDIT: The first Slumberwood bio is up! You can meet my new second baseman
right here. Also, even more wonderful news - Papi's surgery went well, and he's on the road to recovery! And I heard through the grapevine (okay,
Boston.com) that Theo is currently focusing on resigning Lowell right now and is hoping to bring back Timlin, as well.
EDIT 2:
Lowell and Timlin filed for free agency today. Let the negotiations begin.
