I apologize for the lack of posting this weekend - I've been rather busy, what with my family down here to visit and all and my baseball team deciding to win in grand fashion last night. Actually, yesterday was really all about baseball for me, because I didn't just watch it.
No, I played baseball yesterday with the reenacting group at my college. We played by 1860s rules (see
one of my earlier posts for my commentary on those exact rules), which was a lot of fun. The only problem was that for some time we didn't have enough people to field two full sides, so I played permanent catcher for several innings. As a result, my legs are now killing me. (I was also the only person there who batted left-handed. I did the Jacoby sleeve thing once just for fun, but I don't think anyone but me got it.)
I then spent last night sitting in a hotel room with my parents and my kid brother watching the Red Sox win 12-2. That was exactly how I wanted to spend my Saturday. I'm sure you all know that it was a massacre, especially since I just listed the score above, but here are the high points:
~ J.D. Drew hit a grand slam in the first inning (yes, off of Fausto Carmona). Considering his rough season, it must have been especially rewarding for him. It was also fun to see his teammates' reactions as they waited for him at home (Youk even danced a bit).
~ Curt was fantastic last night. He really took it up another notch, and it showed. Hopefully, Matsuzaka can do the same tonight.
~ On a particularly awkward baserunning play, Youk was caught in a rundown between first and second. As he dove back into first, the ball was thrown and it bounced off of his helmet, which was brilliantly funny. (Even better: Pedroia came home on the play and pumped his fist, then looked over, saw Youk, and started laughing.)
~ The Bullpen Band's rally bottles led to six runs in the third inning. Thanks, guys!
~ Jacoby was in the lineup! FOX gave him a lot of camera time, too, so I got to stare at him a lot. Yay.
~ Time to add to the Good Things: Pedroia, who went 2-for-4, would have gone 3-for-4 had Cabrera (his fellow second baseman) not made an excellent play on him after one of his later at-bats. What was amusing about it, though, was since the Sox had such a huge lead by that point, when Cabrera made the play Pedroia started laughing again. (Something must have gotten him in a really good mood because he had the giggles the whole game. And I loved it because it made him more Thatcher-like.)
~ Javy Lopez pitched a scoreless, 1-2-3 eighth. That'll do wonders for his self-esteem.
~ Shocking news, though: Eric Gagne pitched a scoreless, 1-2-3 ninth! Yes, you read that right - Gagne!
~ Oh, and there was
this little story, too. Thanks, you two! (They acted on a suggestion from Lowell's wife, actually, so thanks to her, too!)
What a fun way to spend a Saturday night. It totally beats going out to a frat and getting drunk. I never understood why people would want to go to a frat and get drunk instead of watch baseball. I remembered the whole game, see? And now I get another one tonight! Yay! Can't wait, guys!
