Steph's Crappy Eurovision Analysis: Semifinal 2

May 24, 2012 17:46

Part 1 of this crappy analysis is here.

Now that we've got a full field of finalists, we have to wait until Saturday, when everybody goes head-to-head one more time for European pop domination.

1. Lithuania

My roommate during my first year of college was from Lithuania, so I'm quite happy this went through. Actually, the kid seemed like he was enjoying himself, which is all that matters. He had a bedazzled blindfold, too. It was pretty fabulous. Also, he danced.

2. Bosnia and Herzegovina

I was surprised when this song went through because I personally found it very slow. I'm not a big fan of ballads because they tend to all sound very similar. At least she played the piano, which is nice.

3. Serbia

And that being said, this is what a good ballad should sound like. I didn't mind this one, which is one of those rare occasions where I like a slow song.

4. Ukraine

BACKGROUND DANCERS. WHAT. It's not Epic Sax Guy, but still...WHAT.

5. Sweden

This was one of the best songs of the night, namely because it was actually tolerable. It sounded a lot like Lady Gaga to me, though.

6. F.Y.R. Macedonia

I wasn't really a big fan of this one - it didn't particularly catch my attention and I wasn't quite sure that the singer's voice could carry the song. I don't see it doing too well in the finals, to be honest.

7. Norway

Not bad, but apparently it's eerily similar to Sweden's 2011 entry. You be the judge.

8. Estonia

I couldn't get into this, either. That's probably because it was another slow ballad.

9. Malta

BEST DANCING EVER. Malta's song is pretty catchy, too, but it's their footwork that sold me.

10. Turkey

Yeah, I've got nothing. He really does sound like a certain comedian, to be honest. You'll figure out which one. At least in the live performance the background dancers MADE A BOAT WITH THEIR JACKETS. I'm serious. It was pretty impressive.

And now, let's talk about the not-so-good entries...although some of them were actually quite good. Boo.

1. The Netherlands

I actually liked this song - it was cute and folksy. Of course, the accidental racism (the Native American headdress) did make me wonder somewhat.

2. Belarus

We are the weiners, we are the heroes! ...Okay, it's "winners," but that's what it sounded like.

3. Portugal

This song was very generic. It bored me. I just couldn't think of anything to say about this, seriously.

4. Bulgaria

This really, really sounded like Mr. Saxobeat to me. Maybe that's just me.

5. Slovenia

This was another one of those slow songs. The woman singing this particular one has a good voice, but this song didn't stand out - because it was a ballad, of course.

6. Croatia

Guess what? It's a ballad again! This one had men in skirts, though. The music video, posted above, also has attractive men in various states of undress in it, so I guess I can't complain about the visuals.

7.Georgia

This one was a little bit different, and that made it stand out to me. It wasn't a ballad, and the lead singer was pretty flamboyant, but there was piano playing, which is something I like. Of course, the song wasn't very good, which is why it didn't go through, but the fact that it was different from the ballads in this round made me happy.

8.Slovakia

This was my favorite song of this round. Why? IT WASN'T A BALLAD. In fact, it was hair metal. And of course, that meant that it didn't move on because these guys aren't Lordi.

Alrighty, just one more round on Saturday - the finals - and then we have to wait another year for crappy music. Or we could just listen to the radio and hear a lot of it. That, too.
