First things first. The Mets and Red Sox both won tonight, and it was really exciting - Wakefield got the win for the Sox, and he's now the all-time innings leader in Boston. The man is absolutely amazing. Wakefield is just the epitome of baseball - he works hard, shows up every day, never gives up, and is just downright brilliant and awe-inspiring.
The Mets...went into extras after Pelfrey went nine innings and got a no-decision. They ended up winning on an Ike Davis walk-off homer in the bottom of the 11th, which led to the following:
It started off innocently enough...
Pagan STRIKES, whooping like Tarzan as he does so.
As Ike reels, Pagan makes his getaway and joins his accomplice in the dugout...
AND JON MADE THIS FACE AND IT MADE MY NIGHT. I SERIOUSLY CANNOT STOP LAUGHING AT THIS.
Jon was really quite excited, too.
Pagan triumphs once more as he and Jon make their getaway into the clubhouse.
Jon's face aside, it was easy to forget that in the nation's capital, a kid less than a year older than me struck out fourteen batters in seven innings. Stephen Strasburg was stellar (save for a mistake pitch that became a two-run homer). The Pirates aren't exactly noted for their run-scoring abilities, but they were still a formidable first test for a kid who spent three to four months in the Minors total, and Strasburg aced his first test.
Also, it was very nice to see him go more than six innings. He was on a tight pitch count in the Minors, so we never got to see how long he could last or how he'd alter his pitching as he faced the lineup for the third time (likely tired by that point to an extent).
Let's see how he pans out now.
...I'm still laughing hysterically at Jon Niese's face. I can't stop. I LOVE him.
