Completely Random Prospect Watch: Stefan Welch

May 06, 2010 16:39

Today I discovered that the Bisons made a few transactions - namely, Cervenak was placed on the DL and Santos was sent down to Binghamton as Shawn Riggans came up (I'm not entirely sure why - perhaps it has something to do with that reputation Santos has as not being the best game-caller in the world). I went to NY Future Stars to look Riggans up to see what was going on and saw a picture of Stefan Welch in the 'most recent photos' section. I clicked on it.

And then I found a couple of entertaining things.

Turns out the kid is only a little older than me. He was born August 12th, 1988 and hails from Adelaide, Australia (any ballplayer from Australia is automatically awesome). He's a corner infielder (he's playing first right now, but he's also played third) and is currently in St. Lucie (high A ball for the Mets), so he's with Sean Ratliff, who I mention around here quite a bit because he's a Stanford boy.

Welch should also not be confused for the Arkansas basketball player of the same name who was suspended due to a rape trial. This kid behaves himself. Except in silly pictures.

I'm pretty sure that's the former Tradition Field there (now Digital Domain Park...I think...), so that was taken at a home game!

I'm making Welch my adopt-a-low-level-prospect this season. Let's see how he does - he's hitting .300 on the year already! Next stop, Bingy!

I'm going to a Harrisburg Senators game tomorrow against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Strasburg was called up this week, so he won't be pitching, but I'm going to get a good look at some Nationals and Giants AA prospects! If there's anyone you want me to take a look at for you, let me know!
