Draft Update!

Aug 14, 2009 11:02

Baseball America posted the current status of the unsigned picks from the 2009 MLB Draft.

As expected, Strasburg and Ackley are still unsigned; with the deadline swiftly approaching (it's Monday), some huge deals are likely to go down over the weekend. In fact, quite a few kids are looking for some major moolah:

1 1 Nationals Stephen Strasburg, rhp Seeking multimillion-dollar deal 1 2 Mariners Dustin Ackley, of Seeking multimillion-dollar deal 1 3 Padres Donavan Tate, of Seeking multimillion-dollar deal 1 6 Giants Zack Wheeler, rhp Seeking multimillion-dollar bonus 1 8 Reds Mike Leake, rhp Seeking multimillion-dollar deal 1 9 Tigers Jacob Turner, rhp Seeking multimillion-dollar deal 1 11 Rockies Tyler Matzek, lhp Seeking multimillion-dollar deal 1 12 Royals Aaron Crow, rhp Seeking multimillion-dollar deal 1 13 Athletics Grant Green, ss Seeking multimillion-dollar bonus 1 14 Rangers Matt Purke, lhp Seeking multimillion-dollar deal 1 15 Indians Alex White, rhp Seeking multimillion-dollar deal 1 16 D'backs Bobby Borchering, 3b Seeking multimillion-dollar deal
There are some other notables, of course. I'm going to cover the Sox and the Mets on the list, as well as a name that is significant in Pac-10 land. At least to me.

We start this off with an error - Everett Williams, who is listed here as a Sox draft pick, was actually drafted by the Padres. Whoops!

So we move on to the Mets...

2 72 Mets Steve Matz, lhp May get seven-figure bonus
Matz is from Long Island, so as a local boy there might be a stronger push to sign him. His grandmother is apparently a huge Mets fan, or so I've read, so this could be fun...

3 107 Red Sox David Renfroe, ss Expected to get seven-figure bonus
Renfroe is another high schooler - the Sox have been fond of drafting out of high school over the past few years. We'll see if they're able to come to terms...

3 110 Angels Josh Spence, lhp Expected to return to Arizona State

I...kind of LOVE him. I fell for him during the College World Series Super Regionals when he revealed that he throws a modified changeup called the "choo choo." Much love, Josh.

I took that video myself off of my TV, hence the extremely poor quality.

Other notables for the Sox and Mets from the lower rounds:

5 164 Mets Damien Magnifico, rhp May get over-slot bonus6 194 Mets David Buchanan, rhp May get over-slot bonus 6 198 Red Sox Branden Kline, rhp Expected to attend Virginia7 228 Red Sox Madison Younginer, rhp Expected to get over-slot bonus9 284 Mets Jeff Glenn, c May get over-slot bonus 9 288 Red Sox Kendal Volz, rhp Expected to return to Baylor
In unrelated news, Jed Hoyer (who bears a slight resemblance to Jed Lowrie - must be the name) is one of the finalists to become the Nationals (Natinals?) GM. Make me stop finding him attractive.

EDIT: Because I know you care, here are all of the draft picks from the great state of Oregon. Included on this list is Joey August, a.k.a. Jed 2.0.
