In other words, I've started to put together a soundtrack to the Londinium books. Some of it is serious, but some of it really isn't. (I can't be very serious with this cast of characters anyway.)
Here's what I've got so far. If you have any suggestions, feel free to let me know.
Piano Sonata No. 11 In A Major, K 331 "Alla Turca" - Allegretto - Mozart: Dustin's favorite song to play on the piano. It's only natural that it ends up on this list.
Piano Concerto No. 27 In B-Flat Major, K. 595 - Allegro - Mozart: The concert piece Dustin plays in Book Three. He plays this particular Allegro I've listed here.
Concerto In E-Flat Major, K. 365 For Two Pianos - Rondeau: Allegro - Mozart: The piece Dustin and Thorvald play together. They tend to get a bit competitive, which is funny.
Third Etude After Paganini, "La Campanella" - Liszt: Dustin plays this one in Book Three, as well, although he actually impersonates Liszt when he does so. He cites Liszt as a major influence on his own playing style, actually.
Hand in My Pocket - Alanis Morissette: I swear, she wrote the song about Dustin. I'm using it as his character song at the moment.
Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting) - Elton John: Gib's character song - and it's been that way for two years now.
Collide - Howie Day: It works for Basil and Dustin's friendship somewhat, but I know the slash authors will take it one step further. It's the unofficial slash theme for the novel, then. I'm just anticipating you guys - I know it'll happen. It's inevitable. (
hanachan01 already ships Basil/Dustin!)
Cloud Age Symphony - Shuntaro Okino: Steampunk = Nigel. Nigel's getting his own spin-off series, so it works!
The Boxer - Simon and Garfunkel: Another song for the working class lads in the story, chiefly Dustin. I love it.
The Only Living Boy In New York - Simon and Garfunkel: One of my favorite 'Baz and Dust are friends YAYZ' songs. Occasionally, it reminds me of Peter and Dudley as well, especially the period when they were very close friends.
Taking Care of Business - Bachman-Turner Overdrive: It juxtaposes Basil and Dustin's lives, particularly their jobs. Really.
Koi no DANCE SITE - Morning Musume: Because Robert Sheldon asked me very nicely.
Victoria - The Kinks: I had to. Actually, I want Dustin to cover it...
Sir Norwood Linsay's a Prostitute - Basil Remington and Dustin Thatcher: I don't have a recording of this yet, but I'm working on it...
These are Days - 10,000 Maniacs: When they're not running around saving royalty and chasing insane people, they get to relax a bit. Here's the song that nails it on the head.
EDIT: I just went to the library to pick up Maurice by E.M. Forster. It's worth a look, especially if you're one of the people who is thinking about slashing Basil and Dustin when Londinium is published. Go on, I dare you to Google it.
I also confirmed something that I had read about recently whilst I was there. I popped into the children's section to look for some old National Geographic Explorer videos that I used to watch on television when I was a kid. It was this series entitled 'Really Wild Animals,' and it was narrated by a talking globe named Spin.
Spin was voiced by Dudley Moore.
Apparently I encountered him a lot earlier than I thought I did. Well, there's my subconscious at work for you!
