[It was a simple enough note given to a goatman Butler. To GL from S. Should something have happened to the note, it would make no sense to anyone else. Should they even figure out Golden Land, S for Shinichi was something only Beato could confirm. So even if they saw him give the note, he would simply be a messenger ( Read more... )

[ Beatrice, of course, never failed to make her signature entrance, appearing in a cloud of butterflies.

She looks to be in high spirits, all nightmarish things considered. After all, she's gotten a lot more information and a little less to worry about. Definitely makes sleeping at night easier. ]

You summoned me, Chibi-Battler? [ She conjures her own chair and takes a seat in the gazebo, along with conjuring some tea and snacks. ]

[He nods, taking in her high spirits. Either A, she had seen something good he had no clue about, B, she had met Erika and his thoughts on her might be correct, or C, she didn't know anything and just decided to be cheerful and not worry.]

[Well, no reason to keep himself in suspense.] Have you met Furudo Erika?

I have. [ She smiles. ] The replacement detective who supposedly nearly destroyed my game board in the fifth game, whose given Battler so much trouble...

She's charming. [ cackle! ]

She's....interesting. [Takes a sip of his coffee.] A remarking resemblance to Bernkastel too.

How much did she tell you? I had to keep my comments on the game limited so she wouldn't give those other two more information than they gave me.

It does not surprise me, given that she's Bernkastel's piece.

She told me plenty. I acted as though I already knew what happened, and I ended up getting quite a bit out of her. From what I know now, things that have come to pass aren't... so hopeless, maybe. She has lost and been discarded as a piece.

[ and a pause ]

Does she? Hmm, she's acting more like a Watson, but she is still growing.

Though I suppose Bernkastel has little patience for that considering her attitude to Battler. [Considering this information and looks at Beatrice.]

...something on your mind?

Furudo Erika wants to exist. She gave me this red herself. She also broke down in front of me for this reason, the person who supposedly destroyed her in the match she lost in.

Do you know what that means, coming from a witch's furniture? Can you guess?

[Silent for several moments.]

...I do not believe in the status of 'furniture,' but...

If I look at it my way, it is a will that was broken down in a person, forced to be a servant and think of themselves as less than human. For her to go against that idea...

It means she wants to be 'human.' She wants to recognize herself as a person and no longer be treated as less.

That is correct.

This kakera, however, allows people to exist in a way that ignores the caste system of my world. She does not want to be a detective as the piece of Bernkastel, but of her own right, as the Witch of Truth. However, that is going to be difficult for her, as there's hardly any method for her to get out from underneath her master's thumb.

So, she might end up trying to kill me. She said so herself, if Bernkastel were to give the orders.

....

Witch of Truth...? Really, she does need to learn.

[Smirks and sends down his cup of coffee.] Then I'd like to ask if it'd be all right for me to get close to her? If someone wants to be a detective, I can certainly show her how.

And she really can't be a 'detective' if she kills someone.

That's what I was going to ask you.

Do you think she can be redeemed for her sin, detective?

[Looks to be seriously pondering this and nods.] Yes. I think she's on her way to that, at the very least.

The real tricky part is to make sure I don't give anything away. She is sharp, but I think I can manage it. I've had to hide enough things from Hattori and other clever people, at any rate.

Hmm... the question was a formality, I suppose. Redeeming her isn't our job, nor anything I think we should put an effort to. Furudo Erika will act as she wants, unless Bernkastel is using her.

[ bluntly ] I think she'll be able to pick up on your act easily, if she hasn't already. But that is fine. Keep it up for the most part, because then she will see you as a riddle to be solved, and it will keep her interest in you.

...

I think it would be wise for you to make friends with her. I'm not suggesting this as a player to a piece, but rather something that girl detective might benefit from. Do you know why? Aside from helping her be a 'real detective', as you put it.

She might have already, but it's fine as long as she doesn't figure it out. And really, she doesn't have the information to figure it out anytime soon.

As for why....

The cynical part says it would be easier to manipulate her to our side. To give her a vested interest to rebel against Bernkastel and Lambdadelta.

The optimist...it gives her more reason to be 'human.' Friends are one of the things that define us.

[ snickers ] Of course. I had considered that as well.

[ But another thoughtful pause follows that statement, and a softer look appears on her face. ] Furudo Erika wishes to exist. The furniture... Shannon, as you know her, was mere furniture until she found someone who made her human. [ ... snickering ] I'm not telling you to fall in love with her, that's idiotic.

But perhaps the greatest introduction into this kakera for her would be to explore it as Furudo Erika the detective, rather than Furudo Erika the piece. Play games with her, compete on mysteries with her. If Furudo Erika re-learns her purpose not as Bernkastel's piece, but as a person... keh. I've grown merciful, especially to the girl who tried to tarnish my game! [ looking a little mad with herself, but back to thoughtful ] 'Without love, it can't be seen'. I, of course, cannot get close easily to Furudo Erika due to my position in the game. You're a third party, you can, and what's more, you share her greatest interest. I think... to solve the island's mysteries would ( ... )

... [There is a thoughtful silence, as he took in what she said and thought of his own words.]

I am naturally someone who does not want to deceive. Even the children who are my friends back home did not become so for me to strengthen my act, but their own persistence of dragging me along.

I could lie to someone and drag out information, but it was my own talk with Erika-san that I used to decide whether I would treat her as I do Vermouth or as I did with Ha...a certain someone at first.

Someone I would give the benefit of a doubt to and forgive her transgression should she honestly show regret. I will not give anything away, as I did with that person before I trusted them, but I will not treat her callously.

[Smiles.] Besides, had you not been forgiving, I'd have to protest. It's not like I'm the type of person who can support real torture happening in front of me.
