I love a Carlos and Enrique argument - when they're still talking to each other, there is hope for change and rapprochement, thought I'm sure Enrique would say he is set on his path.

Carlos, at least until he suffers his injury, seems to be taking the classic Renaissance Man path to learning - a little of everything, and a great deal of travel; Enrique's danger-filled childhood leads him to a more direct route. I enjoyed their intellectual flirting very much indeed.

Oh, philosophy and snark - the two best things about this pairing. This was excellently done, a lovely look at them in a time when they can still discuss their differences.

'And you would not be speaking to me with such goodwill if I had.'

Ooh, snap. Enrique sort of wants to have his cake and eat it too, doesn't he? I like the way this story considers his motives for joining the Church, and your young!Carlos is a lot of fun.

your company never ceases to be dull

Wouldn't that mean it's always dull?
