She told him once, jokingly, that he would forget all about her and the headaches she caused him, one day.
He replied in a biting tone, said that he would remember everything and would make her pay him back, one day.

He does remember everything - even all the little things that the romantics always talk about; the little things he thought only existed in the lines of poetry. The tracks of mud her boots would make on his floor. The flaring of her nostrils when she was agitated. The way her pale fingers looked curled around the buttons of his shirt.

They took a picture, once, the two of them and the girls. He declined taking part in it at first, said it should be a nice family picture, and if he was in it, folks might get the wrong idea. She snorted, told him not to be “such a dumbass”. Nami and Nojiko laughed until they cried. He lectured her on how not to use such language around children.
“You see,” she said, “the way you’re talking, you might as well be my husband. Now get over here and smile.”

He doesn’t have the picture anymore. At first, when he would think about it, he would cry from missing her. But now, instead, he smiles - a big, toothy smile that hurts his cheeks. He smiles, from remembering her.
