Five years and three months and two weeks and five days pass before they meet again, but Melissa isn't counting; she just remembers, at intervals, and then does the math. It just so happens that the day should be sweltering and overcast, that the soft breeze stirring her curtains should smell of dust and exhaust fumes and Eve. She never realises she's being reminded of him until some small familiar memory overwhelms her. But he still haunts the small things: someone else's tilt of head or inflection of voice; a sudden dry breath of city air in the summer; the sound of precise steps breaking a fresh crust of snow; turns of phrase that she doesn't remember picking up from him until she hears herself say them out loud.
