Chapter 20
Morning Still So Far Away
One bright flame serves to banish a thousand years of darkness.
-Zen Bhuddist Quote
Charlie’s long legs shored up behind Dani’s and he felt the velvety warmth of her body as he snuggled into her. His arms draped underneath and across her torso as he listened to the slow rise and fall of her breath. Drifting off, her tired body twitched a bit every once in a while, causing Charlie’s heart to thump hard with startle.
The darkness of the late summer night was all around them, even inside their room. The room - once his alone - now belonged to them, as if the memory of transformation had etched itself into the walls like a ghost.
He felt like a ghost. He wanted to stay fixed as he was forever, torso and arms encasing her small body like shiny, impenetrable armor.
At the risk of waking her, he let one hand stray to her hair to stroke its long, complicated length. He watched the strands detangle, smooth against his pale skin. She stirred, her breath coming ragged and uneven told him he’d woken her from the deeper corners of sleep.
Twisting to look at him, Dani’s eyes softly focused through the dark light onto Charlie’s face. Even in the dark, she could feel his eyes on her, looking at her like she was made of glass.
His voice was soft and low, but it filled the room with serene command. “All those years. It was worth living through that to be here, right now, in this moment.”
“Don’t make…Charlie, don’t make me good like…...”
His mouth hushed her, his lips on hers soothed away her thought like it was nothing. Soon, she was lost in the salty, bitter taste of him as his mouth opened to invite her into what seemed like an ethereal dream.
The months of sitting next to him, staring across at him, breathing next to him, eating next to him….all of it washed through her body like a little possession. Her hands reached back behind her body, rushing against him. What was forbidden had been accessed. The unknown, known. The taste of his mouth. The taste of his body. The smell of him. The feel of his skin against hers. The sound of the voice whispering in his ear, speaking only for her.
“The morning is still so far away, Dani…..”
His mouth moved to her neck, kissing a trail to her shoulder that made her shudder in its softness and warmth. She felt a strong hand gently lift her leg at the knee while he slipped deeply inside her again, an arm still cradling her upper body.
What she felt was unfathomable. It was abiding, terrifying in its simplicity. She felt nothing but love.
