Soul Butterfly Daycare: Head Lice
Ulquiorra and Orihime escape the sweeping head lice pandemic at the daycare by sheer dumb luck. Unfortunately not everyone is so lucky.
The next day Orihime came to school with a bandage wrapped around her hand. Apparently she had used the superglue to repair Ulquiorra’s Batman toy. Orihime's older brother, Sora, had to take her to the Kurosaki Clinic to separate the toy from her hand.
“Alright let me see it,” Ulquiorra began as the class finished hanging up their coats and backpacks in their cubby holes.
Beaming, Orihime shoved the new and improved Batman action figure in his face.
“See I fixed it!” she gushed.
“I meant I wanted to see your hand,” Ulquiorra sighed but then got distracted by his toy. The woman had repaired his toy Batman’s arm and head with superglue… and glitter apparently. The five year old stared at the orange and green sparkles dubiously.
“I’m so glad you like it!” Orihime smiled. Behind Ulquiorra, Grimmjow snorted but before he could say anything, their teacher old man Yamamoto called everyone over to the red rug to sit.
It was thee that Ulquiorra noticed that his classmate, Renji Abarai, was absent. Rukia Kuchiki wa missing as well, but she had been absent for several days now and the class had grown used to her empty chair. Ulquiorra was about to share his musings with the woman, but she was talking to Ichigo Kurosaki who seemed unusually sad and melancholy.
“Don’t be sad Ichigo. The principal wasn’t mad about yesterday was he?” Orihime asked, referring to their little glitter escapade last night during their academic study club time. They were suppose to have been studying their English Grammar with flashcards, but instead Ichigo and Orihime had snuck into the art box to use the glue to repair Ulquiorra’s Batman toy and Ichigo had somehow ended up throwing glitter at two students.
“It’s not that,” Ichigo began sadly.
“It’s just Rukia isn’t here,” he explained. Though he would never say it outright, Orihime knew that Ichigo really missed Rukia but before she could offer any kind words of comfort, Tatsuki punched Ichigo in the arm, effectively ruining the moment.
“Ow! Tatsuki that hurt! Why did you do that!?”
“Attention class,” old man Yamamoto began.
“That’s for letting Orihime play with the superglue,” she hissed.
“I did not!” Ichigo huffed.
“Quiet now,” Yamamoto scolded.
“I wasn’t playing with it,” Orihime defended herself.
Yamamoto’s forehead broke out with angry, stress veins. He could get very scary when he became angry.
“Woman,” Ulquiorra warned under his breath.
Suddenly their classmate, Nel stood up and shrieked at the top of her lungs,
“QUIET!” She was quite possibly the loudest person in their class. Uryu who had been sitting next to her fell over from the shock.
At once everyone fell silent. Grimmjow who was impressed, tried to whistle and ended up spitting on Ulquiorra who shove him in return. Yamamoto sighed.
“It would seem that a pandemic of lice has broken out at the daycare,” their teacher began quietly.
“Several students have already been dismissed for the next few days to see to proper treatment. In response and to ensure that no other student is infected or expose, the school board has mandated that each and every student be inspected by the student nurse,” he continued.
Ichigo raised his hand suddenly.
“Does that mean that Rukia and Renji have lice?”
“-wait what are lice?” Grimmjow interrupted.
“Tiny parasitic insects that make their home in peoples hair - especially on their head,” Uryu timidly explained.
Suddenly everyone was scratching their heads.
“Can you imagine having a bunch of little spiders crawling around on your head?” Grimmjow whispered to Ulquiorra. The mental image was actually quite terrifying. Ulquiorra instinctively reached out to grab Orihime’s hand only for him to accidentally squeeze the bandaged one.
“Ouch! Quiorra be careful!”
“Sorry,” he apologized.
The mental spidr image would not go away. Ulquiorra decided that he did not like spiders.
Beside him, Grimmjow scratched his head harder. Ulquiorra stared at him wide eyed. Was Grimmjow infected? As if hearing his thoughts, the six year old scoffed.
“What? It’s not like you and your best girlfriend have anything to worry about,” he gestured to Orihime.
“Both of you have really short hair.” It was true. A few months ago, some bullies had cut Orihime’s hair all off and to make her feel better, Ulquiorra had cut his off in the same style. They were a matching set. Since then Orihime and Ulquiorra had the shortest hair in the class, next to Ichigo.
Maybe the lice only liked long hair? It seemed unlikely but Ulquiorra held o to that hope.
“Alright everyone line up. We’re going over to the nurse’s office for inspections,” old man Yamamoto ordered.
Grimmjow and Ichigo both ran to the front of the line, hoing to beat the other and be first. Nel followed behind them, eyeing her hair thoughtfully. If she had lice, it would mean new friends for her. Uryu slid in line behind them and fought the urge to scratch his scalp. Wordlessly, Orihime took Ulquiorra’s hand while Tatsuki followed behind and worriedly bit her lip. She had been scratching her head a lot lately.
In the end Grimmjow, Nel and Tatsuki all ended up having lice.
“Don’t worry little friends, I won’t let anything happen to you,” Nel cooed and rubbed her head.
Ichigo asked to use the phone in the office to call Rukia while Grimmjow sulked.
“This is so stupid. My hair isn’t even that long,” he complained to the nurse, Ms. Yoruichi Shihouin.
“Length has nothing to do with it,” she tried to explain but no one was listening to her.
Uryu explained how to use the shampoo to Tatsuki but she was only half listening.
“I think I’m going to get a haircut,” she murmured and eyed Orihime and Ulquiorra. The two stood holding hands and smiling stupidly at each other, happy that there weren’t any spiders in their superior hair cuts.
