After dropping the car off at the shop Friday morning, I decided to go ahead and get the plane out for a quick test flight. The density altitude was high and getting higher. Still, the plane climbed out nicely. It's as if it didn't even notice the warm temps. Yes!!!! That's one of the big reasons why I did this conversion!
Everything worked great with the plane. When I got back home, there was a gusty crosswind. I made a good landing, then relaxed. I usually am not in a hurry to get on the brakes after landing and instead like to let the plane roll out. After landing, a gust came up and pushed the plane sideways across the runway! The plane was at that transitional speed between flying and landing. It was light enough on its wheels that the wind was able to push it sideways. I corrected for the crosswind again, planted the wheels on the runway, then hit the brakes to slow the plane well below flying speed. That'll remind me to keep flying the plane, especially when dealing with a crosswind. The initial landing was actually pretty good, so I guess I was feeling a bit proud of myself there for a bit.
After lunch I installed the fuel tank placards and the other decals on the plane. The trophy shop called and the N-number placard was done as well. I picked that up when I picked up the Neon. With only that one item remaining, I am calling this project done!
Jim should've moved the plane back to its tie down by now. Now I have to pay off Jim. That's going to take a while, his bill was worse than I expected. Jim is willing to let me make payments though so I'll get square with him eventually. He did a great job with the plane and I think we have a pretty good working relationship. He certainly deserves every dollar.
I asked Jim about borrowing a couple of his plastic pink flamingos and he said yes.
