[A/N: No idea where this came from. Probably nostalgia while reading old entries, the desire to write for Thirteen again, my personal favorite Cameron's recent activity, and my lack of anything to do at work. Remy's main 'verse, with
rileyadams, but based on the whole "Thirteen's going to Thailand" thing. And in a way, it's to set up Thirteen heading back to the show. Hopefully no one minds.]
The Road Home
They have a small cabin, set behind the clinic, at the edge of the jungle. There's a mosquito net around their bed, which Riley insists on tripping over pretty much every morning. They're not far from a village where Riley spends time learning some kind of martial art along with the language. She fishes most days, and she's as tan as she'll probably ever be able to get, and her body's all lithe muscle and hidden power.
Remy likes to hold onto her to keep herself steady.
The shaking happens more often now, but not enough to interfere with her work. Not yet. She's helping poor families that wouldn't get care otherwise, and it's oddly both more and less satisfying that her work at PPTH had been. But it seems like it's been a long time since New Jersey.
She stopped emailing Taub once his emails turned to divorce and Foreman. She sent the occasional email, picture-heavy, to Wilson, but stopped that too. Oddly, the only person she really keeps in touch with is Cameron, and Cameron's as displaced as she is.
Maybe more. Remy has Riley.
They've both picked up enough of the language to handle their day-to-day lives. Riley sometimes disappears into the jungle for a few days on a fishing trip or something, but she always leaves an itinerary, personalized by the doodles she makes in the margins. They're both surprised by their shared ability to live a life like this in a place like this, but neither of them say anything out loud. They don't want to ruin the spell.
One morning under the mosquito net, Remy realizes they've been together two years and she wakes Riley up with kisses and whispers. Riley says only "duh," then pulls a gift out from under the bed. It's a small ring with a mother-of-pearl inlay, and Remy tells her she's an ass before they kiss until they're both breathless. Remy didn't get Riley a gift, because she's the only trained medical doctor in a hundred miles, and there's not a lot of time for shopping any more. She makes it up to Riley with a day and a night spend in their bed, cut off from the world by the mosquito net.
They make it through another rainy season and Remy starts to think about leaving. Riley, who's let Remy lead their lives for nearly a year, asks her why.
"I think it's your turn, Tex."
Riley's quiet for a minute, then nods. "What if I want to stay?"
This morning, it took Remy ten minutes to turn the water on in the shower. She knows Riley knows, but they haven't talked about it. Remy doesn't think she'll be safe here much longer, but if Riley wants to stay... "Then we'll stay."
"And if I say 'let's go home,' do we even know where that is?"
"'Wherever I'm with you,' Riley." It's from a song Cameron sent her and it's cute and ridiculous, so Riley loved it immediately. Riley laughs, which was what Remy had been waiting for, and they tangle themselves in each other.
"New Jersey?"
"You decide, Ward, not me."
Riley nuzzles into Remy's neck and sighs. "Let's go around the world and see where we end up. You promised Cameron we'd hit London. Let's take the long way."
Remy smiles. "The long way sounds perfect."
