it's not instantaneous. it was definitely not at first sight, or at second - hell, not even at hundredth sight.
1 · the first time he thinks that there might be something is when the other boy asks to spend his seventeenth birthday with him. his heart skips a beat and confused, he quickly turns the invitation down. for the entirety of august 31 2000, he mopes around the house wishing he'd just accepted the stupid invitation. except, birthdays are special! why would another boy want to spend it just with me?!
2 · when he cries on national tv, spouting words of sincere gratitude directed towards his group mates, jun is at his side almost immediately, looking just about ready to cry buckets of tears himself. jun is a crybaby, yes, but never in front of an audience. when jun puts his arms around him in an act of awkward comfort, he thinks about how thankful he is that arashi truly is number one for jun. also, damn, he smells so good.
3 · he watches as jun approaches the mini-pedestal and he feels his ears flush. he watches as jun squirms and embarrassedly recites his confession, `so won't you marry me and cook for me everyday?` he suddenly hates that jun is such a good actor. `oi! is that from experience?!` is what he yells out, but in reality, he's thinking, i want to be on the receiving end of such a confession. the moment he finished that thought, he knew for sure there was no going back.
4 · during a concert, he just plops on the stage, whining about cramps. his heart swells when jun's just there again, volunteering to be the one to take care of the problem. when jun massages his foot, he thinks that it should be illegal, the kind of thoughts running through his mind right then. he laughs it off instead, cracking some joke or other, making thousands of fans laugh at his expense.
5 · finally, the day after a drunken karaoke night (still the best way to destress after all), he wakes up naked in jun's bed, sleeping next to very much just-as-naked matsujun. the other guy stirs and instead of rising panic, he feels like smiling like an insane fanboy. `oi,` matsujun blinks once, twice, looking puzzled, `what're you smiling like that for?`
`nothing,` aiba says, `i'm just very happy.` then jun smiles, that sweet, dorky, lopsided smile of his, and aiba can't help but feel like the luckiest guy in the world at that exact moment.

2006
this year had matsujun stressed. dramas, movies, concerts, variety shows - sometimes it felt like there was really no room for rest and recreation. the 24th was almost over and he still hadn't found the time to find a decent gift for aiba. he'd e-mailed aiba his greetings earlier that day, and he'd gotten a thank you and an offer to hang out as a reply. but as it was, he had a late shoot for hana yori dango and had to say no.
the staff and other cast members decided to go out drinking afterwards, it was christmas eve after all. he stayed for a couple of drinks then decides to duck out early. maybe he can try finding a present for aiba in one of the few shops still open.
"oi jun! wait up," shun catches up just as he steps out the sidewalk.
"hey."
"where are you going?"
he explains that he's going to try finding a birthday-slash-christmas gift for aiba and shun offers to go with. it's christmas eve after all, and it's never a good idea to spend christmas eve alone. a few blocks later, enjoying a walk with shun, he doesn't notice aiba across the street trying to wave him down. neither does he notice aiba's face fall with disappointment as he walks into another shop with shun.
2007
this year was going to be the first time they spend aiba's birthday together as a couple. jun remembers an interview they did with tv guide last christmas where they were asked how they'd spend a christmas together. he remembers aiba blathering on about how he wants a birthday party in a fast food restaurant's birthday room, so he coordinates with a mcdonald's branch and prepares a kiddy party for his partner.
he tries keeping it a secret, but aiba can be such a snoop and he finds out about the party a week ahead.
"jun-kun's the best!" aiba exclaims, and jun almost gets mauled by him, "but i want to help plan it!" aiba requests.
jun's anally methodical side groans, but he gives in eventually. it's aiba's birthday, after all. he'll just fix whatever aiba messes up with the plans later.
2008
they've been having problems lately. what with way too full individual schedules, the little time they were able to see each other they had to share with the rest of arashi.
christmas eve, and they both still had work to do. they talked about it, and the soonest possible alone time they could have next was not until the 26th. jun was getting frustrated. the it's been two and half weeks since they were last actually together, and a man has needs after all.
5 minutes before the 24th was over, though, there's a loud rapping on the door of jun's apartment: "matsujun! i can't not spend my birthday with you!" jun grins and steps aside to let the birthday boy in.
a couple of hours and at least half a dozen rounds of mind blowing sex later, jun snuggles close to aiba and asks, "do you want to just move in together? i don't think i can handle more of this not being together anymore."
"aah, matsujun, that's the best birthday gift ever," aiba answers, and jun feels aiba's smile on his lips.
2009
aiba decides that for a change, he wants to be the one to do something for matsujun. he goes out intending to buy a cake from jun's favorite pastry shop, but halfway there, he decided, wouldn't it be more special if i made it instead? so he ends up in the nearest grocery instead, his cart containing anything and everything he thought would be of use when baking a cake. (also, he ends up buying chicken drumsticks and breading - you can't go wrong with fried chicken, and it still is his birthday anyway.)
when jun gets home later that evening, aiba happily serves him a piece of chocolate cake he proudly made, "eat it! eat it! i baked it myself!"
jun seems pleasantly surprised, and it shows in his smile. however, when he half-chokes after taking his first bite, aiba feels a little worried. but then,
"ah!" jun says, still smiling, "next time, let's prepare for christmas and your birthday together, ne?"
aiba grins at him and practically attacks jun then and there.
later, though, after happily celebrating aiba's birthday and christmas: "aiba!! what did you do to my kitchen?!"
2010
the entirety of the 24th until the 25th of december 2010 is simply spent naked in bed together.
