I've been watching the FIFA World Cup.

I am highly impressed that the human body is capable of such agility. (I'm also a bit jealous, as I sit here with a swollen ankle.) Incredible, really, that the athletes don't wear more padding than the shin-guards! I was slightly expecting to see the audience go into a riotous frenzy, but, more pleased that it didn't happen - or least, not emphasized.

I don't care about scores.

Yet, I must sully this post by giving my opinion on the accompanying sound effects. At first, I thought that buzzing sound was a gazillion poorly tuned bagpipes warming up, & I was excited to hear some good music! I like bagpipes! But then, the note(s) never changed & I wondered if there was something wrong with my TV or the combination of the squadron of fighter-jets over my house, plus at least 2 neighbors running their incessant, satanic lawn-mowers, plus vacuum cleaner.

A quick check on Google solved this mystery for me. Apparently, these "vuvuzelas" are supposed to impart an atonal drone. Fine - anything is better than those damned air-horns! (As much as I like to tune-in to the Winter Games, I hope I can forever avoid hearing another clanky cowbell, again, too.)

Incidentally, I did load Band of the Black Watch onto the phonograph, to help with that little, um, lack of cheerful melody. Could they at least make those vuvuzelas in 3 separate notes so the collective sound would be a pleasant chord? A G Major, perhaps? Nothing in the E chords, please - those are awful, & over-used.

The Mute Button is the best invention since the TV, second only to Picture Mute (aka "off").
