I wrote up a list of most of the things I wanted in a new shoe.
I love my Birkenstocks with all of my heart, but I hate to subject them to the muck & the mud that I must slog thru to do my work. They make plastic Birkys, but, the footbed is too shallow for my very high arch, & I developed a recurrent problem with my
cuboids slipping. Even tho it is much more secure, there are days when I just can't bend over to buckle them.
The basic list:
- Water-proof / water-resistant,
- Slip into - I don't want to have to buckle them when I'm in a hurry or hurt too much to bend over.
- Must be open-toed - regular garden clogs are out. The gunk that builds up inside a closed-toe shoe is unbearably gross.
- Need a tatami-style strap between the toes to help distribute the forces so my high arch is spared from bearing the brunt of the friction.
- Need wide panels on the sides of the foot - a regular tatami won't do. I used to wear them all the time, but my heels were always sliding off the side into the dirt.
So, what that looks like in my mind is an open-toed clog with a toe strap.
Behold:
Earth Footwear Exer-Fit Sandals.
They have a slight backward cant that is meant to facilitate extra calorie burning. So far, my cuboids are feeling better, but now my knees hurt. They hurt anyway - I doubt the shoes have much to do with it. I find myself leaning forward more, to compensate for the feeling of falling backward, contrary to the diagram showing improved posture. I've been leaning forward anyway, even in shoes with a slight lift in the heel, because of the dread of falling backward. This feature does seem to help prevent my tendency to scrape my heels along the ground as I walk. I feel like I'm cranking my toes up & back a lot more to take a step. Maybe I'm just noticing it more. Sometimes, I have to resort to walking bent-kneed like a Sasquatch to stop from locking my knees on the forward part of the stride.
Muck-boots make me walk like a Frankenstein's Monster, & that really kills my feet!
What I have witnessed, is that if you make an activity more difficult, folks tend to participate in it less. Now, for your entertainment (& horror) please proceed to this site:
If Shoes Could Kill. See? My choice of shoes doesn't seem so weird, now, does it?
