Pern fandom circa early to mid 90's was never allowed to be a fandom in the truest sense of the word. Fanfiction was flat out denied and sites that posted it were shut down. The author and I think to a great deal her son were very against it. It was around the time (forgive my memory) that Anne Rice was sued by someone claiming she stole their idea's and a lot of people were iffy about fanfiction.
That said the author wasn't against people recreating her worlds entire.
Cue MUD's and MOO's. MUD's are multiuser dungeons (think warcraft online but text only) and MOO's are dungeons that are object orientated meaning for the low technical peon that I am that I could create objects and with permission new places in the dungeon. PernWorld: http://pernworld.net/ and Harper's Tale: http://new.harpers-tale.com/ are to the best of my knowledge still active though it has been many years since I've played.
Anne McCaffrey still had rules binding them i.e. No Weyr's named the same as in her books, no character's to be used from the books, no white dragons and so on and so forth, but they could exist and you could train up your character to be anything you wanted and if you wanted a dragon you could stay up to three in the morning and attend a global hatching and be given *cough* impress one.
I think it was all very tongue in cheek to be honest. We all wanted fanfiction about the bond between dragon riders and dragons and impressions and learning to talk to dolphins and everything else including the elves that appear in every fandom, but since we couldn't post whole written stories without getting booed out by our fellow fans for drawing 'attention', or flat out stomped out of existence by the Author and her son, we acted it out live instead and posted it as logs.
As for your lovely story in the works, never fear, the Author came to her senses somewhere in the 2000's and now graciously allow's fanfiction.
WOW that's interesting. Totally did not know that about the fandom though I did hit on the fact with my search that the Author has blessed the ficcing.
Huh... lol I love your description --- 'We all wanted fanfiction about the bond between dragon riders and dragons and impressions and learning to talk to dolphins and everything else including the elves that appear in every fandom' I read Pern when I was a lass, so I'm afraid I don't recall much - I know the dolphins were smarties, but haha there were no elves (rightright??)
I actually think my Pern Star Trek AU Lore-integration is a little... cheeky. See it started when I saw someone on Ship Wars mention during a discussion on AU fics they wanted to see, that they'd love to see Pern - a lot of people started commenting about which dragons the characters would have, and someone started sniggering about Kirk being gold, for obvious reasons - he's the captain, and his shirt!
I dunno how people will take what I've tried to do - I made the Vulcans the initial settlers (hmm do they count as elves?), and for them to be a breakaway group of Surak followers who left the homeworld to colonize [instead of say the Romulans]. I made them the genetic engineers of the dragons, the original riders, and also due to the fandom notion of Vulcans having a warrior class, I completely took out the notions of male/female associated with certain dragon colors. (I imagine some ppl might not like that but Star Trek is still my primary fandom. I decided to go with personality, and forget the whole heterosexual female for gold only, heterosexual male for bronze only etc.)
The humans are crash landed early colonists. So the Star Trek universe exists, the Federation is out there somewhere in some form or shape, but the colony remains isolated. Vulcans replace their Halls system - they run study programs, offer diplomas, live in peace with Humans far far in their little plot of the planet.
HEHE as for Weyrs, I named them after Star Trek references ;)
Yes, it be so funny if a Queen Dragon snubbed all the girls and ran to Jim. 'My name is Spock what's yours? I am in need of supbstance, we should partake.'
I'd love to see a pern fic. Even if it was just Jim getting a firelizard.

Kirk would absolutely have a gold dragon :) Your story sound like a lot of fun and potentially epic, which again yay!
