More stolen partial meme!

I stole another day from the 10 Days Meme (via mistyzeo):

1. Catch-22, Joseph Heller.
I think this is one of the first "adult" books I read and really understood. I was about 14 and I'd read some adult classics at that point but found most of them boring and would have preferred to have spent that time reading YA lit. I remember reading Catch-22 - which my dad got me at the library - and being amazed that actual literature could be funny and entertaining, and meaningful to me, even though it wasn't about fourteen year old girls.

2. How to be Good, Nick Hornby.
Ostensibly a sort of a funny novel about a middle-class family in London, this is a book that asks how people can live privileged, happy lives while knowing that other people are suffering, and if you're going to give, how much is enough to ease your conscience? I read this book when I was in the Peace Corps, where I spent a lot of time wondering why it seemed like I was giving so much to no noticeable effect, so it probably had a special meaning to me.

3. Midnight's Children, Salman Rushdie & The Name of the Rose, Umberto Eco
Reminded me of why I wanted to be a writer when I was a child.
