Interesting things (to me).

More stuff about Prohibition from the book I'm listening to.

So I grew up in Sonoma County, California (and am temporarily living there again at the moment), which is in ~Wine Country. (No one who actually lives here calls it that.) Anyway, obviously producing alcohol is the major industry here and I had an idea that the wineries all kind of shut down during Prohibition. I thought I remembered hearing that at a winery one time, although lord knows when or where.

Well, I was wrong! It turns out that Prohibition was a boom time for the wine industry. The Volstead Act contained a loophole that allowed people to make their own fruit-based alcohol for private consumption, a sop to rural votes who made their own hard cider. People took advantage of this and bought massive amounts of California grapes to make their own wine at home, and the grape acreage increased dramatically.

Interesting stuff. I will totally incorporate this into the fic I'm probably not going to write.

things only i care about, history
