-not sure if it is 'broken' or 'temporarily damaged.'
-at any rate, i am upset.
in may, i applied to study abroad at the university of east london as a transfer student (a program specifically for my major here at columbia). one of the requirements was an essay into which i poured a majority of my attention during the last two weeks of classes (more attention than any of my finals received)...and another requirement was a letter of recommendation from an instructor. i asked carmelo, seeing as he was my intro instructor as well as my advisor, but he couldn't write the letter for some reason of impartiality...i think he was on the committee to judge. i asked my theories teacher, stephen, and he agreed...and i was hopeful, because he's a remarkably intelligent individual and i respected him entirely. not only that, but i was extremely impressed with any statement he ever made, so i crossed my fingers for him to say something nice about me.
well, carmelo told me that the 'winner' would be notified by june 1st, and since i wasn't, i assumed that they chose someone else. bummer, right? i was disappointed all summer. ...you probably know where this is going. yesterday, carmelo left me a voicemail that said something along the lines of, "...i just wanted to see what classes you were taking this semester, what you can take at london, and talk to you about everything you're doing there. so, call me back..." and i thought: what? misunderstanding, mistake, impossible. i only mentioned it to lisa (and micah and mark, seeing as i was with them when i heard the voicemail) and left it as a vague hope.
today, i met with carmelo at 3:30 and the first thing he said was, "congrats on london!"
...
of all the cultural studies students who applied, i was selected to study abroad this upcoming semester.
and they didn't tell me until today. i refused to believe him and kept shouting something about liars, eventually standing up to go into the hallway. he kept laughing in his amazingly uplifting way, and then we sat down and discussed seriously what i have to get done this semester --- passport, paperwork, planning...
...i'm going to london!
