"You're in charge now, son."
Five simple words that made Jeb sick to his stomach. This made it all real. A nightmare that he wasn't going to wake up from.
She was gone.
She had never been gone, before. It was always his father who had been gone. It was that same phrase his father said to him, every time he had to leave. He was left in charge of protecting his mother, until his father's return.
He was never really in charge, of course.
She was.
He wasn't old enough. He was just a kid.
A kid with a mother who protected him, after his father could no longer return.
A kid whose mother had been protecting them.
And, now, he was old enough to protect her, but it was too late. Now, he would have to take care of himself; of them.
He would protect them, for her. He would protect her name.
He would make her proud.
