CJ was sitting in the sound booth, setting up his new workspace, when he heard a tapping on the glass. Glancing up, he gave Mackie a smile and waved for him to come in. Mackie made a face and jiggled the door handle, indicating the door was locked. Making a face, CJ rolled the chair closer and leaned over, flipping the lock.
"Sorry about that, Mack," he said, rolling back.
"Meh," Mackie replied, giving CJ a wave. "Victor's blocking the other door," he said, motioning to the studio's main door. "And I need to see a man about a horse before the next news break." CJ smiled and rolled his chair away, giving Mackie a straight line to the other door. Between the news, they were broadcasting records out of Studio A, while the new Studio B was still being set up.
Mackie and CJ had been testing the sound levels of the space, trying to find the best spots for the mic stands.
"Oh!" Mackie turned as his hand reached the doorknob, "Gertie's on a mission to get this place decorated tonight. Good luck getting out of tree duty."
CJ gave him a shrug and eyed the back of Victor's head, through both windows, "I don't mind it." Looking back to Mackie, he smiled and added: "Always helped my mom decorate for the holiday. It was her favorite. Family together and all that," he said, suddenly feeling a pang for her.
After all, today would have been her birthday.
"Well, I'll make sure to point her in your direction," Mackie nodded, and pushed the door open.
"Hey, Mack," CJ called after him as Mackie started into the hallway. With a nod toward Victor, he asked: "Who's Victor talking to?"
Mackie turned to look at the door, then back with a slight headshake. "New actors. Couple of Broadway folks," he shrugged, not noticing that CJ had sat upright. "I could use a break, so I don't care how bad they are." Giving CJ another wave, pointing toward the wall, Mackie disappeared into the hallway and the door slowly closed.
CJ watched as Victor opened the door to the studio, clearly giving someone a tour. He didn't intend to hold his breath, but he was curious to see if it was who he thought it might be.
There was no mistaking Hilary Booth when she stepped into the studio. The look she gave the room wasn't impressed, as much as resigned, which made CJ smile. Jeff Singer followed behind her, mid-conversation with Victor. Victor nodded his way and CJ returned the wave from Jeff, trying to fight an urge to dash out of the booth and greet them.
His eyes stayed on Hilary, waiting for any glimpse of the woman he knew; though she didn't know him from the line cook down at the Buttery. She did glance at him, for a moment, as she finished the cursory inspection of the room.
CJ gave her a warm smile - which was returned with an almost awkward nod - then glanced up as the next record started playing through the speaker.
Of course Hilary Booth - his mother's favorite actress - would enter into his life just as one of his mother's favorite songs played. With a glance up, CJ shook his head and smiled, and felt another pang for his mother.
Things were about to get very interesting...
