DG moved down the hallway and stopped in the doorway of the darkened room, taking in the sight of one of her dearest friends sitting in the dark, save the glow of a dim lantern on the table behind him.
"You're not supposed to be out of bed, Princess," she heard him say.
"I'm tired of being in bed," DG replied quietly as she pushed off the door frame and moved into the room. Cain was sitting next to an incubator, eyes trained on the small baby inside.
DG had to give it to the doctors of the Outer Zone; the place may be stuck in the forties, but they had some of the most advanced medical practices she'd ever seen.
"I could have you arrested, you know," Cain said as she moved closer.
"No you can't," she retorted, ignoring the face he was making. Standing next to Cain, DG leaned forward and reached a hand into the opening. "Hi, there," she said quietly, smiling at the little boy. She hated that she couldn't hold her son yet, but she also knew that the device was his best chance to get healthy.
She ran a finger gently over the back of one tiny hand and smiled when he moved under her touch. "My brave little boy," she sighed. Turning, she looked at Cain and smiled. "And his brave bodyguard."
The news that Jeb and DG were expecting had been good for Cain; it pulled him out of the funk he'd been in since getting out of the suit, and gave him something to focus on. Many of his plans, however, had to be put aside when DG unexpectedly went into early labor.
Cain only left the baby alone during the day, when the nurses were constantly in and out - and had threatened multiple ways to kill him with no trace if he didn't get out of the way - but the nights were his to guard the room. He didn't sleep, anyway, so he was the perfect night nurse.
"Where's Jeb," Cain asked, glancing toward the door.
"Asleep," DG replied, not looking away from the baby.
"You snuck out," Cain surmised with a feigned gasp.
"Like you're really surprised?" DG asked, turning slightly to give him a raised eyebrow. Cain smiled and sat back, saying nothing as he shook his head. DG turned back to her son and watched him for a few moments. She was starting to feel a bit light-headed and leaned against the incubator for a moment; but, Cain was up in a second and reaching out to support her.
"I told you, you should be in bed, Princess," he said in a stern-yet-caring tone.
"I haven't gotten used to him not being there," she said quietly, feeling a wave of emotion starting to wash over her. She was still blaming herself for whatever had caused his early arrival, though there was nothing that she could have done.
Thankfully, DG had been home, and not off on a scheduled diplomatic visit. Had they gone, the family would have lost both of them.
As if on cue, Jeb appeared in the doorway, looking half-asleep and half-panicked. "What are you doing?" he asked, moving over to take his father's place at DG's side.
"Testing your response time," she replied, leaning into her husband's hold. "You should have been here three minutes ago," she said with an indignant huff. "You're a terrible security guard."
"Uh huh," Jeb said as he started to pull her away from the baby. "Come on, Deeg. Back to bed, now, and we'll," he nodded to his father, "let you sit here all morning."
"Agreed," Cain nodded. DG did feel awfully tired, all of a sudden, and nodded.
"Holdin' you both to that," she said with a slight yawn and leaned against Jeb's shoulder.
"You have my word, Princess," Cain nodded. "Just the two of you, all morning."
"Hey," Jeb grimaced. "Do I get any time with my son?"
"Not until you learn to use the night-time voice," Cain said with a stern glare and hand motion. DG smiled at that, and got a wink from Cain.
"Okay, bed," she nodded. Jeb nodded to his father and helped her out of the room. Cain shook his head and returned to his chair.
"You're going to have to get used to that," he said quietly as he reached in and repeated the motion DG had against the baby's hand. They sat in silence for a few minutes before a dull clang could be heard, far in the distance. Cain turned slightly, eyeing the window, then turned back and smiled.
Leaning close, he turned his hand just enough to place a finger underneath his grandson's hand. "You hear that, Jack? That's the bell tower in Central City Square," he continued. "It's a new annual," he smiled, as Jack's tiny fingers closed around his one. "And it's waiting for you."
