He can't help but hear the music, wafting into the hallways. Pretty soon, someone will patch into the base's intercom system and it will be impossible to drown out. He knows they're all gathered in the rec room. General Hawk has reminded him of the gathering twice that day, alone. He's never been one for a social setting, though. Not in the sense they all consider social, anyway. He doesn't mind training, because that's what it is. Missions are really not a time to be social, either.

He can't help but find himself just outside the door, though, watching the others celebrate. She's not hard to find at all, regardless of her fire-red hair. He could spot her in a packed stadium in under a minute. His eyes shift upward, just enough to see the mistletoe, and his mind races. And, as much as he wants to join them, to see her, he just can't do it.

He wants to sit with her, to watch as she smiles; to feel her hand in his; to have her lean her chin on his shoulder like she does on long flights back to the base. But, what he wants to give her, he can't. It's not that the others will see him showing affection for anyone; or that he just might be a human being. He's just not able to let anyone get that close.

And even that, he knows, is a lie, because she is that close.

And that's why he has to work so hard to keep his distance.
