They had been driving all night and half the day before, trying to beat the weather. But, no matter how fast he drove, Dean Winchester just couldn't get his beloved Impala ahead of the storm. His younger brother, Sam, was asleep in the passenger seat and Dean's eye kept falling to the fuel gauge. The needle was bouncing on EMPTY, but Dean knew the car had a few more miles to go before it was completely out.
As the signs of civilization started to spring up - well, as civilized as central Kansas could get - Dean's stomach growled. A minute later, he saw a billboard for a place named Carter's, offering 'Fresh pies daily'.
"Mmm, pie," Dean mumbled, deciding to keep an eye out for the restaurant. Another mile down the road and Dean saw the sign. Reaching over, he smacked Sam across the chest. "Breakfast. It's on you." Sam sat up and wiped his eyes, taking a moment to make sure that the clock was right, as the sky was getting darker. Dean pulled into an open spot and the brothers headed inside.
They'd managed to grab seats at the counter and Evie was pouring them coffee when the door opened and DG came barreling through. "You're late, DG!" Carter yelled from the kitchen.
"Have you seen the sky, Carter?" DG yelled back, pulling her apron out from under the counter and tying it around her blue jeans-wearing waist.
"That's not your uniform," Evie warned, nodding to Sam and turning away.
"I'm here, aren't I. He'll live," she replied, nodding toward Carter. Glancing at Dean, DG offered him a fake smile. "Hi. I'm DG and I'll be taking care of you today." A second later, there was a deafening crack, a bright flash of lightning and the place went dark.
"God, I hate Kansas," Dean huffed, dropping his head to the counter. "Wake me when it's over."
