Part One | Part Two

For three days, Cain tried not to think about what Raw had told him. Of course, the more he tried not to think about it, the louder the Viewer's words were. Whether DG wanted a reaction from him... from anyone, or not, she wasn't behaving like a princess.

'She's not a princess. She's a kid.'
'She may be a kid, but she was born a princess.'
'Yeah, well she sure wasn't raised one. Cut her some slack.'
'Now you're defending her?'
'No. I'm just saying that...'
'What?'

Cain sighed. "It's not that easy to change your ways," he said quietly.

Cain let out a long breath and leaned back in the chair he'd claimed. As he stared at the ceiling, Cain realized that he really wasn't one to talk, because he wasn't handling the change well, either.

For giving up his Tin Man ways, he was sure doing a lot of policing of a certain princess. He was trying so hard to keep her out of trouble that, Cain realized, he was forcing her to act out even more. Send her one step back, she'll take three forward.

And he kept following her.

'She really doesn't need you, y'know.'
'I never said she did.'
'Then quit acting like you're her father. She has a father.'
'I'm not acting like her father.'
'You are.'
'Well, I am a father. It just... comes out.'
'You want her to need you.'
'What?'
'You need to be needed. And here's a lost little kid for you to save. Only, she saved you. And herself. And everyone else. She doesn't need you.'

Cain let out another deep breath.

'Prove me wrong. Walk away.'
'What?'
'Get up, get your hat and go. Never look back. She won't miss you. Probably won't even notice you're gone.'
'I think she'd notice.'
'You want her to notice.'
'No, I don't.'
'Yes, you do.'

With a grunt, Cain shook his head and pushed himself out of the chair. Fighting with himself wasn't going to solve anything. Especially since Cain already knew that he was right.

Only problem was, he didn't know which part was right.

There may or may not be a Part Three. It may or may not take place before or after this. Steve is fickle. Just a fair warning. ;)
