Azkadellia was the only one in the library of the Northern Palace, but she was not alone. While everyone saw the child, the true Azkadellia was fighting to be heard. The witch was very strong, even though she hadn't quite managed to get "settled" in the smaller body.

The shock to both systems left the witch with extended moments of exhaustion and she would sleep. Az, afraid of the threats the old woman made against her and her family - she'd already killed DG and had set her sights on Ahamo - didn't dare find her mother during these moments. Az knew that no one would believe it was her, anyway.

Maybe she could write another letter and slip it under the door. Of course, she should have done it the moment the witch went to sleep. The last time she’d had the idea, the witch awoke mid-confession and was so angry that she made Az throw the page into the fireplace, and held her hand in the flame, long enough for Az to feel the burn of the flame. No one but Az knew, of course, as the witch healed the skin.

But Az wouldn't forget.

She was all alone in the palace and she was afraid. The only thing that usually calmed her was reading, so Az had headed to the library in search of some story that would lift her spirits; something to think about while the witch was abusing her new form.

On one of the lower shelves - within the reach of children - was a collection of stories Ahamo had written for the girls. In truth, he'd simply transcribed stories from the Other Side, in as much detail as he could remember. Az grabbed one of the books and moved over to the large chair, wishing for her mother, her father, her sister.

Wishing she could do something...

Az didn't remember falling asleep, but she did. As soon as the girl was out, the witch woke up. She was rather disgusted at the idea of being curled up in a large chair with a silly child's story in her lap. As the witch flipped the book shut, however, her eyes caught a few lines and she sat up straight.

'...and, as if by the magic of the Outer Zone, the small toy soldiers came to life. Like an army, there were hundreds of them, ready to follow Tom wherever he went. Tom looked around the room and saw a few of them climbing into trucks, atop the rolling cannons, onto the boats... even into the balloons.

Tom knew that Barnaby would be outnumbered, and Mary - Barnaby's gem - would soon be Tom's again...'

The witch looked at the fire and, slowly, turned her head toward the door.

Where did the child keep her silly toys?
