Get me out of this Country

Jun 26, 2005 01:13

I will be delighted when I can read over 90% of my journals and think back on the whimsical, carefree, technicolor dreamscape experiences. Instead of running into a trainwreck of a journal like this one is about to turn out. Talk about a series of unfortunate events. Well, I was on a normal patrol Thur. and things were looking up cause it seemed ( Read more... )

If ANYONE has a right to complain here it is YOU my dear. You have been uplifting and encouraging to me since you started and my problems are a mere .0001% of yours. I couldn't even handle the THOUGHT of going everyday in a place so hostile and uncertain. Honestly, I don't even like being back in the states because it is so much more violent and uncertain than here. I live in a very peaceful and easy society now. And I am thankful for that everyday. And I am proud that as an American, my country helped give these wonderful people back THEIR freedom during WW2. Tomas just told me a story about a man he did a photography assignment about when he was in art school. His name was Thorolf Rafto and his son started the "raftoprisen" http://raftoutv.rdrift.no/Default.aspx?tabid=510 in his honor. It's a foundation for human rights. Tomas told me that during WW2 Thorolf spent his military time in England fighting with the RAF or with Bomber, he's not sure now. During WW2 their was no fighting in Norway except for sabatage and home guerillas but it was small. Most Norweigans were trained in Canada by the RAF as pilots in a place they called "Little Norway". It was in the Toronto area.
Norwegians would escape the country by taking small boats at night to the Shetland islands and then they would get sent to England and finally Canada. The reason their wasn't fighting here was that Hitler loved Noway. He told his troops to be careful with Norway. They used Norse mythology in their ideas and thought that it was a pure race and country. They were hated here. They burned villages and killed lots of people but the damage was minor compared to most other countries. Norway was neutral at the beginning of the war like Sweden until the British started putting mines in the fjords. Then Germany invaded to protect us from the British. Yea, right. Anyway, back to Thorolf. When Thorolf returned to Norway when he set foot on Norwegian soil he knelt down and kissed it and vowed never to have bad day for the rest of his life. When TOmas took the photos of him he jumped over and hugged him and kissed him on the cheek. Tomas was really confused because men just don't do that. Tomas decided to choose him because he had seen him a few years before giving a speech at his school and he was just blown over by his concentrated kindness and the genuine concern for other people. Tomas just said that "people often talk about subjects but it is different when you are the subject. Then it just flows around you". My husband is a wonderful and down to earth realist with a big heart. And this man made a PROFOUND impression on him. The war changed him for the better. Maybe that is the only thing we can hope for as humans, change for the better. I always tell my kids, you can't change the world but you can change YOUR life. If everyone made their own lives better then we wouldn't have all the shit we do today. We are thinking of you and wishing you all the hope and strength we have. Take care of yourself and friends and atleast OUR world will be better. And THANKS for putting YOUR ass on the line to try to make everyone else's better too. I hope your friend is ok. LOVE and KISSES!

That guy sounds very interesting. In high school we had a sub that was a prisoner at Aushwitz and she was the same way...always smiling and embracing people and each day.

It always seemed to me that in a world full of people who are suppose to be at the top of the evolution chain, intellegent beyond anything created, that we could come up with a way to deal with our disagreements other that violence. I mean most our laws are based on control violence and letting people know that it will not be tolerated in a civil society. Where did the human race go wrong and why was this hypocracy allowed to fester for so long. Why haven't we been able to solve the problem of worldwide violence? And why is our country supporting such defeatist ideas? I'm included in this hypocracy and as soon as I can I'll correct that mistake and never make it again. Thanks sandyfish for the words of encouragment, they really uplift my spirit.
