Summary: The small being wore no clothes, showing how human-like his body was. A few flashes went off and the being quickly raised its arms around his face, and at the same time, large feathered wings came from nowhere and covered the front of the being. People were in awe, some cheered, other continued to snap photos, some recorded the whole thing on their green pads.
.archive. Cameras flashed and whispered echoed in the large hall. This was their big day, the scientists who were put on this project years ago. No one thought they would ever be able to do it, but they did. People from around the world, reporters and scientists alike, gathered in the large old hall for this grand showing. Seventy-five years in the making, one generation to the next, and the greatest accomplishment had come. Soft murmurs, rumors, danced from lips to ears and from one person to the next. Flashes continued every few seconds, awaiting the cue of when those large velvet red curtains open. They were all anxious, standing on their toes, everyone wanting a peek under the curtain on the stage.
So when a single light turned on, illuminating the center of the stage where a small microphone stand stood, the room grew completely silent. Footsteps echoed, soft as they went wooden stairs, and grew louder as the body approached the microphone. A tall man with brown hair came to stop and removed the microphone from the stand, walking a few feet to the edge of the stage where he rested it out of sight.
Turning back to the audience who remained deathly quiet, a dimpled grin painted itself on his pale cheek. He kept the microphone down by his leg as he walked back towards the front of the stage. The brunette wore nothing special, although the occasion was extremely important. Simple business pants and a buttoned up shirt tucked into his pants. The light beamed on his figure as he stood on the marked space. Raising the microphone, pausing as the flash of a camera went off, he chuckled into the microphone. “Thanks for the enthusiasm.”
Not one soul moved; media hungry eyes remained glued to the man on the stage. “As you all may know, mostly the reason you are here, is after Seventy-five long years of work; my Father’s work, my Father’s dream, and the work of my Father's and my own co-workers, as finally paid off. We are now in the year 2100, and a new history has already been made. What was once thought as Science Fiction in the 1970’s and pretty much all the way up until now, has been proven wrong. It is not fiction. It is real. And we have it, right here, behind this screen.”
Fellow Scientists clapped as the press roared, wanting more, wanting to see the project.
“Calm now, we have plenty of time. Of course, we wouldn’t want to be too loud now would we?” The brunette chuckled at that before walking back and forth slowly across the stage. “I mean not to delay your curiosity, although I know it must be killer by now, but I am just doing what any scientist does. Waste time talking.” The hall filled with light laughter for a second as a bright green light beamed around the room and back out of the window.
The hall remained quiet for a few moments before Yutaka walked back to the center of the stage. “Are we ready?” Silence. “I know this isn’t wrestling or anything but show some enthusiasm again. Now, who is ready to see something that has only been in dreams?” After that, the hall grew loud again. Flashes of cameras, pens scribbling on old fashion papers, lime green lights flickering by other’s hands.
“What we have here today, behind this curtain, is the first of its kind. Years of work, years of perfection, years of disappointments, and we made it. Now, my friends, I, Uke Yutaka, present to you, RK.” The scientist announced raising his free hand high above his head as the large red curtain slowly fell to the floor. Bright green and white lights flashed, blinding the hall. “People of Japan, people of the world, this is a new day! Here before you, is the first humanoid made from science. A whole new species, Arious-sapious! “ And just like that, the hum of the old fashioned microphone was blocked out with the loud voices of the audience as they pushed as close to the stage as they could. Their eyes hungry to see the new species.
Yutaka could only beam a large dimpled smile as he slowly walked toward the large glass cage. Inside the glass box, was a huddled figure. Small in structure, smaller than Yutaka, and it seemed to try and hide in the floor. Putting the microphone back to his lips, Yutaka stopped in front of the glass. “Now, he is quiet shy, so if I could have you all quiet down for a moment.”
And just like that, silence flooded the hall within a matter of seconds. The scientist smirked at that before turning towards the glass box. “RK, will you rise to your feet?” The scientist asked softly, the microphone still near his lips as he looked with kind eyes towards the huddled being.
Slowly, the being shook, trembling, but complying to the questioned command. The audience went in awe at the pale skinned being. Soft white hair whisked around a smooth face. The small being wore no clothes, showing how human-like his body was. A few flashes went off and the being quickly raised its arms around his face, and at the same time, large feathered wings came from nowhere and covered the front of the being. People were in awe, some cheered, other continued to snap photos, some recorded the whole thing on their green pads.
“Now, now, calm RK. You are safe,” Yutaka cooed softly before standing up from his crouch and turned towards the audience. “Please, no flashes right now.”
He turned back towards the being hidden behind long black and deep blue feathers before putting his free hand on the glass. “Now, now RK… Show them what you know.” Brown eyes, filled with trust looked into the glass box where the small being hid, until slowly, the wings began to retract, uncovering the pale skin. Small legs moved forward, only two small steps, until the creation stood before the scientist. Large doe-like eyes looked up to the brunette as RK slowly reached a hand to the glass, resting on Yutaka’s aside from the glass that separated them. “That’s a good boy.”
Slowly, keeping his hand on the cold glass, Yutaka turned half of his body towards the audience. “People here before me, meet RK…”
Slowly stepping to his left, his body coming face to face with the corner of the glass box, his large doe eyes looked onto the audience. His eyes moved from one person to another, absorbing their faces, learning their emotions. The biggest one the small being picked up on was curiosity, which soon filled his brown eyes. Slowly, his eyes moved around, his head rose as he looked at the top of the glass cage, and soon, his head snapped from side to side. His large eyes absorbed the frame of the glass and his lithe arms rose up, reaching for the top. His finger tips were a few inches shy until his stood on his tip toes, touching the cool glass. His head quickly snapped forward, towards the front of the hall, eyes boring into the hallway at the entrance.
The being’s plush lips parted and he emitted a soft sound, almost like a curious chirp. Yutaka smiled, slowly stepping closer to the edge of the stage. “RK is special, aside from being the only of his kind, we, my team and I, picked out almost every single thing that made him. And one thing that we didn’t even imagine happened. His knowledge. All RK seems to do is learn. Those two large eyes are more than just seeing you and me, they are copying us. He watches, learns, and copies. As I can tell as he is acting now, many of you are curious, about him. About the project. Or about something else. His eyes can read every emotion, and curiosity, apparently, is one he hasn’t been introduced to yet.” The scientist explained.
The small being in the cage flinched every time a soft green light came from the audience, unseen to the human eye. But the curiosity was quickly erased from his face and his hands dropped in front of his chest, hands in loose fists. His upper lip raised slightly in a snarl as his brown eyes remained glued on the entrance. A few seconds later, gun shots and screams broke out through the hall.
Bright flashes of gold’s and greens filled the large hall and Yutaka froze. “Get him out of here!” the scientist screamed just as a bullet zoomed past him, puncturing the glass cage. RK let out a defensive hiss towards the glass, his small feet backing him up as far as possible, until his bare back touched glass. More gun shots went off and the glass cage soon shattered. RK let out a high pitched scream, completely inhuman sounding, as his wings came out and shielded his small frame.
Screams from the audience continued to wail about, piercing the beings ears. It was a few moments of chaos before RK flinched as his side felt like it was on fire. The being wailed in confusion and his wings rose from around his body, seven feet in the air, stretching as far as they would go. His large doe eyes, filled with fear, his own fear, searched for the one person he knew since he first opened his eyes. And there he was, on the front of the stage, lying down.
RK ran up to the scientist and rolled him over. He didn’t know anything. He didn’t know what the sting was in his side, or what the red stuff was that came from Yutaka’s lips and chest. All he did know, was those almond eyes that looked at him with such care, looked at nothing now. And that’s when he screamed. Guns still fired, but the screaming was dying down with each body adding up in piles on the ground.
RK panicked then. The only person the being trusted was no longer there. His bare feet took off, wings rested right against his shoulder blades, as he ran behind the stage where the glass cage originally was. He ran down a narrow hall and into a room before shutting the door. He remembered doors… he always opened them and shut them to hide when he played with Yutaka. But now he wasn’t playing, but he was hiding. Hiding for his life…
Wild eyes flipped from one side of the room to the other as his head snapped side to side until he saw something familiar. The being ran up to the wooden chair and grabbed the white fabric draped over it before putting his arms through it. Footsteps pounded down the hall, his acute hearing easily caught it, and his head snapped towards the door. His breath was caught in his throat as the knob turned and the wood frame slowly opened.
As soon as he saw the dark shadow in the doorway, he took off. He sped past the figure, feet running as fast as possible, wings flapping as much as they could in the confined space as everything blurred around him. As soon as he made it to the stage again, he jumped off of the edge and his wings caught him in the air. One large and narrow flap of his wings and he sped towards the large stained glass windows. Windows open, he remembered. Yutaka showed him that. So when his body pushed through the glass, he felt no pain as glass ripped his delicate skin on his face. All he thought about was being free, being safe…
But he wasn’t safe.
Yutaka was gone.
The dark night sky was new to the being and he hovered in the air for a moment, eyes looking to the white moon before looking around at the thousand stories high buildings around him. Neon colors, new to his eyes, burned and he whined, covering his large eyes with his forearm for a moment before peeking out from behind it. His ears twitched as he heard gun shots from below, and he released a high pitch noise when a bullet flashed beside him, causing the feathers on one wing to ruffle from the speed.
RK didn’t know where he was going when his wings started moving on their own accord, natural instinct to get to safety, but he just wanted away from whatever those people were. He flapped and gracefully spun about, rounding narrow corner after corner to get to safety. The sting in his side became a burning sensation, but he tried to block it out. But when his wings began to slow, his grace began to fail, and he began to fall, he knew something was wrong.
And just like that, he ran into a pole sticking out of a building with traffic lights on them, and fell.
The last thing he remembered was the loud crash of more glass, and a cold pain on his back before sounds blurred his ears. Black covered his vision, but he felt warmth grab his upper arms. RK whined lowly, one arm with speed, clutching the arm of something else with the last of his strength, and then it all went black.
“What are you?”
