pop! pop! pop culture!

I saw 13 going on 30 with Melissa this weekend. It would have been a pretty good movie if the music hadn't been so dated.

I was not a teenager in 1987, but from what I remember of the time, teenagers were listening to bands like Europe, Whitesnake and Midnight Oil ***NOT*** Pat Benetar or Talking Heads. The girls of that era weren't cooing over Rick Springfield, they were drooling over Kirk Cameron.

These discrepancies in pop culture really irk me for some reason. What saved the movie a little bit were many "spontaneous" dance scenes. If you ever want me to not hate a movie, get your characters to break out dancing once or twice to a cheesy pop song.

Entertainment Weekly has a really good article with Poppy Z. Brite this week. It follows up the Haven Kimmel interview they had about six weeks ago that was also quite good.

I hope to someday be interviewed in that arena.
