Sara’s breath caught when he got too close. Had he ever been that close? Perhaps, she thought, but he seemed somehow closer tonight. There was beer on his breath, but it was mostly just them; Grissom, Sidle, her hitching chest and the tickle of his beard. She wondered if it would be distracting when they kissed.
He leaned in. She closed her eyes.
He missed.
“Well, that was strangely unsatisfying,” she managed with a laugh.
The second date was better.

It’s agonizing. Sara excuses herself from his office and slams into the bathroom with an angry clatter, bolting the door behind her. She is furious. Or that’s what she tells herself; furious with him, furious with herself, with the job and what it does to them. She insists she’s furious, even though “desperate” is a better assessment.
This isn’t why she came to Vegas; this isn’t how it’s supposed to be. But she can’t go back now. She’s tried. He won’t go forward. She knows it.
So that’s it, she thinks. We succumb to paralysis.
Sara Sidle doesn’t cry over men. But right now, she wants to.

A week after the surgery, Grissom is returning to work. It still hurts. He knew it would, knows it will continue to hurt, because it was surgery; that’s what it does. The healing hurts more than the procedure. But responsibility trumps comfort, and he returns, although his head still pounds.
The halls are buzzing with excitement, with sympathy, with urgency, and enough noise to make Grissom nearly wish it hadn’t been successful.
“Grissom!” Sara appears; Sara smiles, Sara speaks. “Welcome back.”
He has suddenly remembered the best part about audition.
