Sophie had class today. She really ought to be there.
Instead, because this hyper-vision stuff was wretchedly fascinating beyond anything any lecturer could provide, she'd shut herself into her own closet for the best darkness she was likely to get easily, with a book of Far Side cartoons, to see if she could read by reflected heat. The paper and the ink must have different properties, right...?
Not quite as different as what could be made out in usual circumstances, apparently. She had to look pretty closely and squint a little before the drawings became clear, and the text was just as tricky. There were little strands in the paper breaking up the letterforms, like those annoying Internet bot-tests. It was almost a scary sight, but she didn't let herself look away.
