Staring at the black TV screen for solid minutes, and he was already feeling restless. How many hours until Lance was home? He frowned, considering packing up and going back to Cooper's.
Only.. he didn't want to be back there. He loved Cooper and he loved spending time with him, but this... this was home. He curled into the worn sofa, suddenly having a brilliant idea. He had texted Lance at work before. Why not now?
Hunny, I'm home.
No reply. Well, fuck, Zachary, maybe he's busy.
So he fired off one to Claire.
Miss you, babe. What's happenin?Still nothing ( ... )

"Hi, Zach," his mouth said cheerily, apparently not getting the memo that he did NOT want to talk to him because he was going to die. "Can I get you something?"
The screen of his register blinked. Starry nights, dammit.

He really had to stop reading Shakespeare out of boredom.
"Hey, man!" he said, genuinely happy to see the boy again. Zach looked up at the list, feeling dizzy. "Pick me out something, I don't know what to get."

...Like Lance. Fuck. Don't think about that. He rung it up with random discount, pointedly not noticing the way the screen's light wavered. It was a medium, because Zach had gotten a medium before, hadn't he? Yes, he had. Stop spazzing, Holmberg. Starry nights, he added for good measure.
"All right, two-eighty-two," he said, also not noticing the way Valerie frowned at him.
For the random discount, probably.

"Enjoying your shift?" he asked sarcastically with a brilliant smile plastered to his face, leaning on the counter to wait for his latte.
