He had come home, finally, blessedly. Yes, that's right, he said it--home. Lance's place was home. He was in a famously good mood after a stupid night of board games and snuggles. He had wanted to get home before Lance went to work, but he had missed it. That took a chip out of his optimism, but it was a blow he could afford. He sighed happily at the lack of coat at the door, and threw himself onto the couch.

Staring at the black TV screen for solid minutes, and he was already feeling restless. How many hours until Lance was home? He frowned, considering packing up and going back to Cooper's.

Only.. he didn't want to be back there. He loved Cooper and he loved spending time with him, but this... this was home. He curled into the worn sofa, suddenly having a brilliant idea. He had texted Lance at work before. Why not now?

Hunny, I'm home.

No reply. Well, fuck, Zachary, maybe he's busy.

So he fired off one to Claire.

Miss you, babe. What's happenin?Still nothing ( ... )

He knew it. Oh, he had seen this coming awhile away! Joey's grin widened a little out of nervousness as the dark-haired teen appeared in the reception area. He was screwed, so screwed and--starry nights, starry nights--screwed.

"Hi, Zach," his mouth said cheerily, apparently not getting the memo that he did NOT want to talk to him because he was going to die. "Can I get you something?"

The screen of his register blinked. Starry nights, dammit.

Was it just him or was Joey acting a bit... queer? Queer as in strange.

...

He really had to stop reading Shakespeare out of boredom.

"Hey, man!" he said, genuinely happy to see the boy again. Zach looked up at the list, feeling dizzy. "Pick me out something, I don't know what to get."

Can it be laced with a sedative? "Sure. Carmel Mocha Latte. Great for when you have a killer sweet-tooth."

...Like Lance. Fuck. Don't think about that. He rung it up with random discount, pointedly not noticing the way the screen's light wavered. It was a medium, because Zach had gotten a medium before, hadn't he? Yes, he had. Stop spazzing, Holmberg. Starry nights, he added for good measure.

"All right, two-eighty-two," he said, also not noticing the way Valerie frowned at him.

For the random discount, probably.

Zach smiled at the random discount, pulling his last three dollars out of his pocketand surrendering them hesitantly.

"Enjoying your shift?" he asked sarcastically with a brilliant smile plastered to his face, leaning on the counter to wait for his latte.
