At the very mention of the thrice-cursed book, the smile faded from Mohinder's face.

"Yes, well," he muttered, "That book might suit the more eccentric types, but it's actual premise is rather shaky."

Trying to turn the conversation away, he asked rather randomly "So how long have you been in New York, if it's not too bold of me to ask?"

"Oh, not at all," she assured him. "I've only been here a few weeks so far. My sister asked me to come stay for a while because she broke up with a fairly nasty fellow and she doesn't want to be alone in her house. Admittedly I'm not sure how much damage someone like me could do, but it's a comfort thing, I suppose."

"Sad," said Eden, dripping sympathy. "Wish her luck from me."

Ivy shot her a saccharine smile.

"I will. You're nice to say so.'

Mohinder eyed the two women, wondering if there was something he was missing. There was more poision in each woman's tone than anything else, making him feel a bit uncomfortable.

"Well," he interjected brightly, "we're off on a tour of the city ourselves. Any place you could suggest?"

"Central Park is lovely this time of year," she told him, turning a sweet smile on him. "And the route for the New York Marathon goes past some very good museums and galleries, if you're interested in that."

"Thanks very much," said Eden, before Mohinder had a chance to answer. "We'll keep that in mind."

Following as Eden took ahold of his arm and began to not so subtly pull him away, Mohinder nodded at Ivy, smiling. "Very nice to meet you, Ivy. Good luck with biology."

Once they were out of earshot, he turned to Eden. "What was that all about?"

Mohinder's innocence had been endearing when it was just Eden. This just served as a reminder: Every silver lining has a cloud around it.

"Look," she said patiently, "haven't you ever met someone that you couldn't quite say why but they seriously creeped you out? That was the poster girl for that feeling, right there."

Mohinder frowned, glancing back in the direction they'd come. "Well, she did seem a little odd, I suppose..."

Turning back to Eden, he raised an eyebrow. "You think something was wrong with her?"

"From a five-minute conversation?" Eden shook her head. "Obviously I can't be sure of anything. I just didn't get the feeling she was someone I wanted to be talking to any longer than I had to, is all. Not a big thing."

Mohinder shrugged apologetically. "Sorry about that. I'm afraid I have a nasty habit of striking up conversation with complete strangers."

He grinned. "Something you well know."

"Well, sometimes it works out all right," said Eden, what tension that remained dropping away. "Besides, I think I remember starting that one myself."

Laughing, Mohinder held up his hands in surrender. "You're right, you're right."

Sighing, he looked around them, taking in the pedestrians milling by. "I'm thinking our adventure is turning out to be a bit of a bust."
