It was cold, colder than she remembered Winter to be; which was strange, given that she was lying in bed with another warm body. It must have been the air conditioning, she decided, tossing around. She wasn't supposed to wake him. He was tired. She was tired too, but she had a lot to keep her busy.
"Candice, you will be coming to dinner Thursday night, won't you?"
Why had she agreed? It was going to end badly. She knew it already. It was a given. Not because Jimmy was with her - by all rights he shouldn't have come - but because it was her family gathered round a table. Playing verbal tennis with each other. And they liked nothing better than to throw their venom at her.
Okay. So maybe she was exaggerating. Maybe they would actually behave for once. Yeah, and maybe she'd sprout a twin for these occasions instead of having to do the right thing and going herself.
