Boy Boy is an 11-year-old Maori kid with an absent father who he idolises. He lives in poverty with his Gran, his younger brother, Rocky (who has magic powers) and a group of cousins. The year is 1984, and Boy spends his time talking to his pet goat, imagining up all the amazing things his father has done and trying to impress the girl he likes by dancing like Michael Jackson... until one day his father returns, and doesn't quite live up to what Boy remembers.
This is such a funny and sweet movie; it makes you feel good even when it's breaking your heart. The characters are quirky, even a little bit wacky, but still believable (think Napoleon Dynamite with more heart/reality). The performances are all perfect, including that of writer/director Taika Waititi (playing Boy's father), who based Boy's childhood on parts of his own experience growing up in New Zealand.
It's really no wonder that this has become the highest-grossing New Zealand film of all time - it will no doubt be my favourite film of the year.
